Title: New Laptop
Post by: chrisdicko on November 27, 2014, 21:53:10 PM
The missus laptop has just died, and seens as though it is black friday tomorrow, thinks she might as well get a new one

Any pointers who will have some amazing deals?

She doesn't use it for much, just the internet facebook and loads of photo's etc.....that's about it. Any pointers for what to look for in one? I.e what processor should we be looking at now-a-days?

Cheers

i3 or i5

won't make much difference which... i3 will probably be a bit cheaper because of the inbuilt gpu

4gig ram minimum

SSD makes a big difference... but it's not essential

:-)

(no idea on where to look tho)

I bought an aspire switch 10 for my GF. She wanted a tablet and a small notebook. The aluminium/plastic casing definitely trounces the Acer T100 its nearest rival.

The magnetic catch is also far better than the physical snaps of the t100 to join the tablet to the keyboard and the keyboard has a nicer feel.

The performance is better too and with windows 8.1 professional and a full version of Office 2014 (word, excel, PowerPoint) included. It does everything she wants.

Facebook as a tablet on the sofa.

Work stuff as a laptop on the table.

And candy crush saga every bloody where.

Kinda want one for myself but already have 5 laptops and an iPad. Lol.

Cheers for the replies guys.

She actually went out and bought a Chromebook by HP. It has 4GB of RAM, but only got a Celeron Processor.

To be honest, it does seem decent for speed for what she is using it for, and cost £229. Just got to get used to the differences now.

Cheers

celron isn't great... but £229 is more than cheap enough to make up for it !

Rather than make my own thread I'll jump in here. Looking for something that has a bit of speed as my son likes to play Lego marvel on the current laptop, which is dying.

Also think maybe a 17" display would be best. Are there any manufacturers I should avoid?

Also any places with refurbs to make it cheaper?

Basically got a, nearly, 5 year old Dell which is i3 and some AMD gpu inside.

Wouldn't mind going AMD either if it was a bit cheaper. Although I'm not up to date with how they perform compared to comparable Intels.

I'd go with pc specialists and spec up a custom one. Not as expensive as you'd think.

If looking at Dells, do a search for DMX Dimension, they usually list most of the Dell deals going at the moment, I think they also list HP deals as well..

Obviously, January usually has the better prices from my experience, although not usually on Jan the first but usually a week later you get deals popping up with 3 or 4 upgrades on top of 10% off.. depends on what you are looking for I guess..

Dabs do some re-furbs etc - worth a look possibly.
