Title: New phone time
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on November 15, 2007, 10:23:49 AM
Okay Im not after tons of gadgetry, all Id like specifically is a quality camera on the phone, so one of the new 5mpx jobbies with a good lens and flash would be par for the course.

The Samsung G600 looks good, I like Samsung style and buttons.

The SE k850i is porbably powerful but I dont like their interface or the fiddly buttons.

The Nokia N95 looks  :o but is no doubt an arm and a leg on contract.

Any other phones I should be looking at, good deals anyone knows about, sites I should look at?

Oh one other thing - I do NOT want to be on T-Mobile again, worst service ever, I think they have two masts to cover Britain

Im currently paying circa £30 a month.

Go with the Nokia ... has had sterling reviews.  The gadget show rated it above the iPhone (head to head roadtest) mostly because of its superb photo capabilities.  It should be quite cheap as there is a newer model replacing/soon to replace.  If you are starting a contract, you can get it for free.

The contracts all seem to be around £40 a month for the N95, which is a lot of dollar for a pretty phone.

Sorry, my bad, contracts are quite high on paper.

You should phone customer services of Orange/Voda/02 up, and say you are interested.  You can haggle these guys down.

Id go for the K800i.  The buttons work fine and the interface is intuitive.   It wont cost and arm and a leg and has good camera and xenon flash.

I used it last night in nottingham at a gig and got a few good pics/movies.

Yes the K800i is a very good phone, iv had it for over a year now and its been by far the best phone iv ever had! i might be looking to upgrade to the N95 soon but the msot noticable problem with them is random restarts on the phone sometimes when a call etc and minor crashes. I wouldnt mind upgrading to the Nokia 6300 phone either (i know its not as good as the K800i but i love the design of it and the 16.7 Million colours it has build onto it)

The 6300 is the best phone Nokia have produced for a long time.

The N series is crap - really really slow and the 9MP camera is awful (but thats what you get for ramming 9MP onto a small CCD)

Oh and dont be fooled by the GPS on the N95, dont work unless the keypad is slid down and even then it only can cope with 5 satellites where as most bluetooth GPS units will do 9 or 11

I got my first mobile on contract but never again it is better to buy an unlocked phone cash or with installments (is that what it is called when you pay once a month ?) which you do when buying on contract anyway but is not locked and the fees are lower.

N95 8gb are out now..
Bigger screen, buttons are hidden + it will have the nGage Firmware, so should be ok to kill some time gaming.

update: got both myself and my girlfriend a nokia 6120 on 3, and we both love them. brilliant contract too - £18 / month (18 months) for 500 units (minutes or texts) and 300 3 to 3 calls.

n.b. reception is the best ive ever seen - you can fall back to both O2 or Orange if you cant get on 3.

In the search for a decently featured phone, and just as a replacement fof the increasingly annoying faulty Vario I have just picked up a Nokia 5300.  Ive not had a Nokia as my own phone since about 1996, so well see how this goes.  Seems to have enough features, its not too heavy, but its a little bit chunky so it doesnt slide out of my hand.  was only £50 as well after my CPW Staff discount.

Word, I cant see it on the o2 site but I see its on cart and horse phone warehouse.

Pretty crap contracts atm :x

edit-> to the point where its £300ish on eBay and I might just go with that...

double edit -> infact sod it I think I will, my contract is currently £15 a month for 900 messages and 220 xnetwork minutes. If I go up to a £25 12 month contract I get dry bummed, 50 mins 200 texts! £30 is 200 mins 400 texts but £15 x 12 is £180 anyway, thats just the contract alone without the charge for the handset...

£60 back on quidcos about the best you can get I guess.

Got mine off eBay, I cant be doing with joke contracts, youre just paying for the phone over a longer period of time.

My current expensive contract with pee-mobile is due to expire this month, got any recommendations on what to go for if I get the phone seperate as opposed to getting one on a contract? At this rate it seems Ill be waiting until the end of Jan for a half-decent contract to come around.

Over 300 notes on ebizzle, although some may scoff and say thats a stupid amount of money, its just all in one lump sum. Unlike on a contract where you will get crap minutes and charged the earth, they always do with new handsets.

Yeah I looked on ebay, cheapest I could see were £300-£350 and not from HK.

My current contract is pretty crap anyway so I dont really have anything to fall back on if I did purchase one unlocked. I may just have to wait another month for the better deals to roll in.

Ill be very interested in seeing what you make of it though  :)

What hero are you smoking tomorrow night? Mine will be a humble RyJ no. 3 left in the humidor.

May go for standard Petit Corona, one of those fonsecas, or just go crazy, not sure yet not really too arsed about new year.

Bit of a generalisation there, but honestly do you carry a digital camera with you 24/7? what about when you need to take a photo there and then?

And if you do have a digicam on you 24/7 must be nice to have the space.

Yeah, plus the older generation of phone cameras were a bit wank, but these new 5mpixel camera phones really are branching that gap between phone and actual camera as they actually have decent lenses.

This thing is epic.

WLAN access on it works spot on, plenty of prospects with that treat.

Also nokia have finally got a radio that works well, ok so yes you still need to plug headphones in for it to work, but heres the nice bit, its a 3.5 line in jack so you can put ANY headphones in you want. I thought no way, you would surely have to use the nokia headphones for it to get a signal, banged some sennys in and they seem to work fine!

Turning to the pics the phone can take, heres a couple of very rushed shots of random crap, will get more if people want.

Yep!

The spec looks spot on;

Windows Mobile 6 Pro
3G + QuadBand (3.6Mbps)
GPS with TomTom maps
Large screen with touchFLO
WiFi/Bluetooth
3.2MPX camera + front camera

Has anyone tried Google GPS yet? Quite looking forward to it :)

Just waiting for o2 to launch the Orbit II, hopefully end of the month.

Already have my package agreed - 1000 minutes (+unlimited to o2), 1000 texts, unlimited data (I think its a 200mb fair usage cap per month) & insurance for loss/damage/theft all coming to 42 quid a month.

I was looking at the Sony Ericsson P1i as well as I used to have the P800i and P900i although the Orbit seems to wipe the floor with it.

If Nokia had given the N810 a 3G chip Id seriously be considering it over the Orbit though!

Bump.

So I went to Carphone Warehouse today and ended up getting the Nokia N82 phone spur of the moment, the contract is a little better than what I was on with sh*te-mobile, so all is good.

The guy in the shop was very confusing about the GPS capabilities, saying that you could use it as satnav fine, but the GPS + maps needs a subscription, which I dont quite understand. Can anyone shed any light on this?

This gist of it from some guys blog:

Quote1.  The route finding is only visual by default. You have to pay extra for a voice-prompt service, on a subscription basis I believe. I'm not sure I like that model much. As an in-car navigational aid it is pretty useless without voice prompts. To navigate on foot, though, in a strange city, it is perfect. Having such a facility always on your person "just in case" would be really useful. However, see below...
   2. The maps are downloadable. The phone comes with very little, and when you browse to a new location it downloads the maps it needs. It can do this over WiFi, which is good because the maps are going to be quite large and it would be expensive to ship them over GPRS (or 3G?). So, if you know you are going somewhere, you'll want to browse there in advance to make sure you've got the maps. If you don't know you'll need it until you find yourself lost, then I'm afraid you're stuck with downloading a few MB of maps. It seems to download in smallish chunks, which is either good or bad depending on your point of view. I've just gone browsing around Manchester, which I've never looked at before, and pulled down about 2MB of data. On the plus side, I guess this means you can get map updates for free...?

So the GPS is a complete novelty now. A bit disappointing, not that its the reason I bought the phone but it would have been nice to be able to retire my satnav and have it all in one were it any good.

Love the phone other than that :)

A few people have told me that the phone only reboots or crashes sometiems because of the Memory cards in the phone? i havent got any card in the phone yet but i have ordered a 4GB microSD card off eBay tonight so il see how it goes :D

I use google GPS... fine for walking around navigation, but in a car itd be a nightmare. No voice prompts, just a dot on the road where you are. Doesnt even scroll through instructions when you reach turnings and stuff.

You will need something like co-pilot or tom tom to use it properly.

Yeah shouldnt be too bad, its usually not as easy as just using the nokia installer app. On the N73 you had to put some stuff on the memory card, boot the phone then follow the installation, chances are it will be similar, tbh theres usually instructions on how to do it included anyway.
