As is typically the case, right between me looking to upgrade my system, my nearly 10 years old 22" monitor has decided to start playing up and I think the tube is on the way out.
Suggestions in the 24" widescreen TFT realm are welcome.
Ive been looking at the latest 2408 model Dells lately with 100%+ NTSC gamut, but there are apparently some issues with these and it looks like the older 2407 models are more reliable. If anyone has any good knowledge on this it would be much appreciated. Are there any competitor models that are worth sponging on? Any good review sites?
Cheers.
Is this the NEC one that has died?
Everyone seems to just go for Dell these days, I have two some okay mid-range Sony rebrand 19" DVI Monitors (Targa Visionary) they are serving me well, not to great with doing graphic work on, gutted my Hansol went :(
Yeah it is Gav, its not dead yet, but from a cold switch on its a very fuzzy image for about 10 minutes, and at the very top of the screen it occasionally starts to peel back leaving a white edge, for want of a better description. Poor thing has served me well until now! Naturally I want the best I can get to replace it, especially with the precise graphics work I do these days.
After I did some investigation the Dell screens arent as good as they used to be. Other manufacturers are doing the same panels in their own branded cases. Unless you are looking to spend £500 or more on a 24" then just pick a decent brand that you ahve had a physical look at. Im still drooling over the 24" HP2408. Picture quality is awesome, and the casing looks good. They are only the TN panels, but they ae damned good for the money (£300ish).
I dont know if I want a TN panel in all fairness, Id be happy to spend big boy money on a screen, IPS or S-PVA at a push. Im not bothered about gaming frame rates or anything, Id rather have better contrast, colour and overall quality of picture.
Not everyone seems to experience these problems with the Dells so Im really not sure what to do, what are the alternative panels in the same panel class/price range I should look at?
HDCP over HDMI would be an added bonus, Im sure they all come with that now though.
very useful thread on anandtech (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=31&threadid=2049206&enterthread=y) for anyone looking into buying a decent TFT.
Ive decided the Dell 2408WFP is the one to put my money on, the ghosting issues appear to have been resolved and the only other reported problems appear to be one offs that need replacement or down to poor calibration.
Ill be ordering it next week :) This being my first move into TFT territory, this had better impress me.
Im still using a 17" Viewsonic tft i bought from Tekheads from when Sam was running the show, but its served me well, over 3 years ithink and not a single dead pixel or issue with it as yet. I would consider buying another viewsonic when i go bigger :P

I was cynical as hell before making the move from CRT.
I absolutely love my Dell 2407WFP.
Theres a Hyundai PVA screen, using the same samsung panel as Dell and the good Apple screens.

I was the same when I ditched my aging Trinitron. As sad as I was to get rid, the difference is amazing - and Im using a pretty cheap TFT.

It looks good. But I think Ill stick with the peace of mind and extra connections of the Dell, which can be had for near enough £430 delivered with 4 year warranty and 0 dead pixel guarantee. :nana:
Whats DisplayPort about? Anything using it yet?
Forgot to mention, does anyone know what cables come in the box with these Dells? Im expecting at least a DVI or analogue if not a HDMI.
