Title: New xbox360 next year
Post by: neXus on April 22, 2006, 13:03:53 PM
So it is worth waiting and holding off buying one:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=31173

QuoteChip fab Chartered Semiconductor of Singapore says it will move the IBM-designed chippery to a 65 nanometre technology starting in the first quarter of 2007. The existing chip uses 90nm technology.

The smaller process means more chips per wafer and therefore more chips per buck. The smaller, thinner chip should also draw less power and generate less heat.

The console currently sports a pair of fans, together with an arrangement of heat pipes, to cool the three-core chip at its heart. Use of a new chip will allow the Vole to re-design the console, should it choose. Certainly, it will strip out redundant components to reduce the loss it currently makes on each box sold. Ã,µ

It would not get much of a design change, but if you could use one fan instead of two it would mean you did not need the room, Talk of Hd dvd as well could see a version b released. One with HD, drive, smaller body and still be cheaper then todays.

That has always been on the cards due to MS approach to the implementation of the Xbox360.  There will more than likely be a respin of the 360.    Its a shame they cant get it in place for November ;)

True, but a smaller version may help appeal to japan even more.

No, it will be games that appeal to Japanese people that will get it to sell in Japan.  Size is not everything.

you can either wait for whats around the corner an prices to drop or blow all your cash on something crazy and love it.

Afraid I fall into the latter category - poor but happy ;)

Thought you had a 360 already ethen?  Oblivion = teh win!

Oblivion has to be THE game for the Xbox360.  Its an RPG.  So why is it not selling like hotcakes in Japan.  Thats RPG capital of the world.  Japan is an incredibly difficult market to break into.

From my own personal experience, the simple fact that Microsoft is an American company seems to to be working against them in Japan. That and the fact that most of my overseas friends are much more interested in titles like the latest Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy games...Even despite the existence of Oblivion.

Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey (both connected with Hironobu Sakaguchi) might change things though. :?:

Thing is, if they played it they would like it.
Its Becuase its MS and they are not keen and Sony has such and ingrain kid brainwash which is hard to break. Soon as a kid is born and goes home for the first time the word he will see the most will be SONY.

For anyone that kind of thing is very hard to break. People there once they have had the xbox did say it was nice, graphics and games good, they moaned about the look and size but liked what it offered.

TBH I dont think it is that big.  It may very well be but is not an eye sore of a black box, it is no suprise that japan consumers hated it.  I rather like the current design.  id just wish they do something about the air intake/exhaust noise.

What the 360 is lacking atm imo is a killer game.  The equivalent of a playstations Gran Turismo or Metal Gear.

I was toying with the idea of getting one the other day, but if theyre talking about making a smaller/quieter/hder version then I think Ill wait.

afaik the original plan was just to change the die size, a redesign was never on the cards afaik, but I reckon a sleeker look would work in the boxs favour.

I think its the odd ocasion its a good thing to wait.
The xbox actually got downgraded when it was made to be cheaper. Seek times on first gen was better then 2nd and 3rd gen, think 4th gen is faster now, but stil, early buy was good.

Here, looks like you could get a better, smaller, cheaper console and buy that time halo 3 will be about, ps3 launch so price war around as well.

I reckon the 360 is a bit of a con in that respect to be honest...  Its a bit smaller than the old xbox but only by about the same amount as the power brick you have to sit behind your tv.  Its like theyve just taken the power supply out of a pc and dropped it into a box on the power cable.  Sure it wirks but its not very elegant and is a bit of a cheating way of making the console smaller.  Apple pull the same stunt on a lot of their equipment too tbh.

Oblivion wont sell as well in the east, it isnt an eastern style rpg, for one thing i am guessing they didnt redo all the voices for that market. Imagine if they released games over hear without translating, only a few hardcore fans would buy it.

The style of the game is nothing like the style of rpg that is produced over there and the fact they have masses more games of that genre that were specifically designed for their market oblivion isnt going to sell.

Tis like selling snow to an eskimo

I dont mind the 360, but the design is a bit annoying, the curve shape is pretty and all but it wastes alot of space. Ok for someone in a nice large living room, but not for a student for who every bit of space is precious.

Then you are going to want one or two nice 1080p HDMI input plasmas for your PS3.

Good luck in finding a game that actually uses 1080p correctly and is not just an upscaled 720p render. ;)

PC for teh win in that regard,
320x240 to whatever you want... 2560 x ? and beyond

soon to be HDMI outputs too but even those cant touch a dual dvi + 30" high res tft

for quick and easy action though,
console,
tbh ive got a box360 and ive not touched it for two months or so and i cant justify getting anymore games that are 100-200% more expensive than the versions on the PC (that also usually come with FREE multiplayer)

once i move rooms and get everything laid out better that might change but i dunno, got 5 games for it and probably well in excess of 100 for the pc to be going on, Just hope they have the common sense to get a quiet or lower speed drive in the blooming thing, it makes more noise that the twin deltas out the back end.

There is an article on the inquirer stating both sony and MS saying they dont think they will see one on their machines, as deaths said most will just allow for the higher but not actually be true to it.

Not this gen but next gen machines.

With the cooler running chip the bloody thing wont have to speed up the fans so much and maybe it will just slightly quiter!

Its the DVD drive that makes vastly more noise than the fans in my 360.
