whats a noobs linux distro? Im building a new pc, based around a shuttle SN25P, Athlon 3800+ or something like, X1950Pro so Ive got the perfect opportunity to try linux out.
am i going to struggle to find drivers?
last time i tried this i gave up cos i couldnt fathom rpm packages out. so im a proper noob, will be asking loads of daft questions.
I do lots of surfing, some web design, lots of mp3, mp4, avi abuse etc, use office, so would appreciate suggested replacement apps for the above too.
Matt
Ubuntu. It comes with openoffice, is dead easy with the latest version to get mp3s etc. to work and uses debs instead of rpms.
Even better it has synaptic which lets you install whatever programs you need without even having to know what a deb or rpm is :)
sounds good.
does it run wine? so i can play command and conquer?
Matt
It has wine in the repos, so just start synaptic find wine and click install :)
As for playing command and conquer, youd have to look in wines prgram database to see how well it works.

Cedega is far better than faffing bout with wine as a noob. ;)
Distro? Ubuntu is really nice about installing proprietary stuff easily these days. Mepis is a Ubuntu based distro thats a flavor lots of people will like, with more media bits working out of the box.
Im pretty Linux savvy, but have to say, I prefer a basic Ubuntu install pretty much out of the box with few tweaks. FWIW, I have two teens staying at the house this week, I set them up basic accounts, and within minutes with zero help, theyre already building playlists to burn, and grabbing Prison Break via torrent. :cheeky:

Hah that put a smile on my face :)
Im thinking my main rig is getting moved over to Ubunto now, Windows is generally annoying me and I do so little gaming on a high-end rig I may as well use something im going to learn from rather than boring crap.
If you want high-end gaming on linux, a great new demo came out for Penumbra : Overture (http://frictionalgames.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=685). It has better physics than Half-Life 2, IMO (http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=24056). Im playing the full boxed windows version atm until the final linux client comes out. :)

right, Ive got ubuntu onto the shuttle hardware. seems to be easy so far. Cant get ubuntu talking to my netgear router over the wireless connection though.
Ive got one of them safecom wifi adaptors or a netgear wg111T which it doesnt really like.
network applet prefers the safecom, it actually shows the wireless connection with that plugged in.
but i dont think its actually trying to talk to the router. ive added the mac address into the router so it should be ok, but it doesnt seem to talk to it.
any ideas on how to work out whats going on?
Matt
Is nm-applet showing a connection? You can try setting up a connection with the regular network tools as well. If NetworkManager is a PITA, you can safely uninstall it. It *should* "just work". Try logging into a public wifi network if youve got one handy. Or the neighbors...
cant install NM as ive not got an internet connection on it. just got the standard network applet.
It shows the connection, but i cant find a way of scanning for SSIDs to see what there is and choose one, you just have to type it in.
Matt
NetworkManager services are installed by default. The nm-applet is just an applet for those services. I meant that you can uninstall it and just use the graphical network tool in the menu to administer the network if that helps. If you dont have Synaptic delete the files, you can reinstall it without a connection as itll still be in the cache (I think).
You should, however, be getting a dropdown of available networks like this:
http://flickr.com/photos/landotter/269033757/
Its just a matter of dropping down and clicking on the one you want, and entering a password if needed.
not getting that drop down at all. where should it appear if i were to get it?
just gone into network and chosen the eth1 interface, it pops open the right properties.
however in terminal i do an iwconfig and it doesnt list the eSSID ive put into the connection and it says access point in invalid.
i wonder if it doesnt like the usb adaptor im trying to use.
Matt
USB wifi on Ubuntu is beyond my knowledge and likely a PITA. A standard compatible Linksys card (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-WMP54G-Wireless-G-PCI-Adapter/dp/B00008DOYL/ref=sr_1_1/202-9501086-2895852?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1176660212&sr=8-1) is cheap if you just want it To Work.
Drop down appears if you click on the applet that shows the connection strength or even a disconnected symbol.
well cheers for the suggestions maximus.
still struggling to get it to accept the SSID name that Im supplying.
Matt
think Ive worked out whats going on, been reading the ubuntu wikis.
I think the instal of ubuntu is focing itself on a channel that the router isnt advertising on. so i need to know how to change the channel its on from a teerminal window.
sounds like come friday i might be able to get an installer to sort all of this for me.
