Title: Novatech PC - DVD drive riveted into place?
Post by: Mongoose on October 13, 2007, 18:56:42 PM
Im hoping that Im missing something obvious here.

I have just taken delivery of a Novatech Icon 4200, a bog standard ~£200 desktop, for my younger sister. She uses her computer to produce documents for her university course so she needs a back up solution. Her old machine has a DVD-RW drive and I did not anticipate a problem transplanting this into her new machine in place of the supplied DVD-ROM.

However, the right hand side of the case appears to be pop-rivetted into place, and the DVD drive is screwed in on both sides (actually it has a nifty catch system on the left hand side, but this is not the side presenting the problem!).

Has anyone got any experience of these boxes? Am I missing a catch or something? or have Novatech actually built a box with a non-replacable DVD drive?

Novatech do build their own PC, for that price, instead of fixing it, they assume youll bin it.

Irrelevant bullsh*t, but they are  on Hamilton rd, my sir name is Hamilton, also I buy lots from there, this PC is a bundle.

if I have to, I will, but Im pretty sure itll void the warranty if I do so Im trying to avoid doing that.

I have a Novatech Lappy which so far has been great, but the chances of my buying any more stuff from them are dropping by the minute if this is the kind of trick they pull on their budget line stuff. I know its a cheap box, but I expect to be able to take the side panel off and replace things, I dont see why that should be a premium feature.

It wouldnt surprise me. I remember sorting out a similar box for a friend at uni a few years back and it was riveted in the same way, and when we did manage to get the case side off the molex and IDE cables were all hot glue-gunned in place.

yeah Ive seen that one pulled before now too, in a strange sort of way I wouldnt mind so much if it was both sides and the molexes. Its just the RHS, the plugs are as normal and theres even a pretty nifty clip thingy holding the drives on the LHS so it should be screwless to remove any drive.

The screws in the drives engage in runners on either side of the bays so that when the clip is undone they should just slide out.

It would be a really neat system, if it wasnt crippled by the RHS being riveted on. Now that I look at it more closely, the RHS, top and bottom pannels are all one piece of metal, so if I want to change that drive Im going to have to drill out all the rivets on the back and remove all three panels, and then of course Ill have to come up with a way of holding the side back on again afterwards.

that sounds like it was a case design. Maybe its possible to remove the drive rack from the case rather than the case from the insides.

I thought that, but it looks as though the drive rack is also riveted in. Tomorrow I will closely investigate the possibility of removing the front panel, though at first glance it appears to be held in with screws which cant be removed without first removing the RHS of the case.

I am thinking it must be possible to get the front off, otherwise the case cant have been put together unless the whole computer was assembled BEFORE riveting the top, bottom and RHS panels into place. That doesnt seem likely.

Success!

the front bezel of the case comes off, its clipped on not screwed as I originally thought. Once you realise this, its actually a very good case, especially considering the price of the machine.

So Novatech have gone back up in my estimation again, a very nice budget machine.
