Title: NTL Blocking sites?
Post by: Tekheads Support on March 26, 2008, 09:18:28 AM
A couple of members of staff here today are saying they could not access the Tekheads site last night, they are using NTL Cable, has anyone else had problems in accessing the site with their ISP?

Anyone know what is causing this? it cannot be a hardware fault due to the amount of people it has suddenly affected.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Im on ntl and I can get on ok, but I have found that sometimes I cant get on some sites and can others, I think its ntl doing maintenance as it always corrects itself after a short while.

I think your right, it would not be the first time I seen people mention NTL and not being able to view sites on the forums, Forget the solutions but I think you may be right in regard to them changing their DNS now and again and people having hard coded their settings then having probs.

Presumably if it is DNS it should correct itself within a couple of hours, they could not access last night and still cannot get on now.  They phoned NTL but they blamed the hardware, 4 different computers 3 houses :S

nothing to try then other than wait or winge at NTL ?

iirc, everyone used to slag them off all the time for that :o
(taking too long to update or something like that)

Im on NTL but I use OpenDNS name servers.

I can see tekheads.co.uk ok but there is a huge blip on the router at (for me) hop 7. The average response is < 25ms with hop 7 being > 200ms.

My experiences of NTL are:

* DNS servers cant take the load, really really slow to respond on occasions. I just ran my own DNS server, which improved things no end.

* Their stupid transparent proxy server, which used to :
    - Randomly ignore the no-cache meta tag
    - Randomly ignore requests from the browser to force refresh (ctrl + reload in firefox)
    - Updated its cache when ever it felt like it
    - Make every computer on the internet look like it had a web server running on it

* Routing, telewest are shocking at best, the amount of routing loops and general routing problems they have was silly.
We used to have a backup link at work on telewest, we had to get rid cos it caused more problems than it fixed.

... on a good note however

* Connection Reliability - excellent, I can remember only a handful of times the connection went down in about 4 years. Really was rock solid (and I could work around the problems above 90% of the time)

So in conclusion, if you cant connect to a site then do the following:

* Check the name resolves (just ping it and see if it finds the IP)
* Do a traceroute/tracert to see if there are any routing black holes or loops.
* Complain like hell to NTL :)

I concur with the above suggestions that its likely to be DNS server issues. I had NTL for 2 years at Uni (well, discounting the time spent with them having randomly lost my DD details more like 20 months). I found the connection was usually good so long as I used someone elses DNS server. The NTL server would frequently throw its rattle out of the pram and loose half the internet for a day. Usually around exam time when computer problems were one thing I absolutly didnt want.

NTL havent been using the transparent proxys for at least a few months now. WHat it might be is that theyre currently upgrading everyone on the 4mbit package to 10mbit, which is bound to cause a few issues. CHeck their ntl region against this (http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/existingcustomers/faster/schedule.html) list

UPDATE:

first of all their setup: NTL Modem -> Wireless Netgear Router hardwired into a desktop pc then 3 laptops working on the wireless.

With all that setup they cannot access the tekheads.co.uk site.

Took the router out the equation  with just the desktop pc hardwired straight into the modem still didnt work.

Tried Hardwiring the laptop straight into the modem and it WORKED.

Went back to the modem and router setup still didnt work, thought it must be a problem with the desktop pc, so turned that off but the laptop still couldnt find the tekheads site.

Conclusion it appears there is an issue with the desktop pc and router, any help would be much appriciated.

All other sites work....

force an update on the router - should be in the settings somewhere.. otherwise it wont renew until the lease expires.

On the desktop from a cmd prompt :-
IPCONFIG /flushdns
