http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/48700 for the router would be good. Tis what I have and it doent suffer from having too many connections using bittorrent like some routers do. :)

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/103208 for if he has desktop pcs, and

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/94366 for a lappy.

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/60014 if you want to be funke and go USB, but if your freind uses linux it might be slightly more difficult to st up than one of the other 2 options.

One last thing> Personally I avoid all belkin wireless products, had too much experience with trying to make them work.

I have a  netgear card in the desktop and a Linksys in the lappie. Both   work great with XP or Linux. I think the Linksys wifi software is far more elegant. There are plenty of routers out there, and once  theyre set up, you forget about them, so  Im not too arsed about the  slightly cryptic Dlink I ended up with. Shop the sales. ;)

Normally you just plug the router in, connect up your computer, get into IE and enter something like http://192.168.1.1/ in the address bar. Enter the password supplied and everything else is handled through the browser interface.

Usually the password is just that, password or admin or something similar so its best to change it.

Does the router do away with the NTL modem?

I really got no idea about cable..

ah youd either have to get a cable router (if theres such a thing)

or if the cable modem hes got has a ethernet connection,
a wireless router thats at least got a routing table you can modify
(all should really, my cheap Ã,£30 3 year old non-descript has),
or even a wireless access point that you can plug into the cable modem and route to it.

You still have to use the ntl modem I think, just get the parts from ntl direct:

belkin wireless router is what i would recommend

the one without an adsl modem.

Just installed that router into a couple of houses, got netgear for both of them to start with but then changed them to belkin as both had a problem with holding wireless connection and had to be restarted alot.

Belkin ones have been steady as a rock.

Also they are some of the cheapest big name routers around.

Would only advise them for cable though as belkin suck at adsl modems.

:D :D :D

There are a few of them, most do the cable, wired network and wireless so by shoving it beside one of the compys with a network connector it can be used direct.

When using a wi-fi setup its best to put a software firewall on *every* computer connected, even if the router has one built in.

Personlly I dont like the belkin routers. My gfs house has one and I end up resetting it evey coule of hours due to it simply refusing to allow any data to pass through it.
