Title: Ok so Ive installed Ubuntu
Post by: Rivkid on June 06, 2007, 14:57:19 PM
Had a spare laptop at work so thought Id give it a whirl (typing on it right now). Got it all set up and connected to our  windows 2000 domain ok and installed a few apps to familiarise myself with it. Its not bad - and its quite nippy on the laptop. If I only browsed and wrote letters Id certainly use it instead of forking out for windows. Not sure why people feel so passionately about it (well or windows to be fair!) but it does the job nicely. Maybe Ill love it more as I learn to use it.

I love Linux because I dont have to run anti-virus/anti-spyware software, I can actively contribute towards making the software I like better by having the source code; theres never going to be any kind of pressure to upgrade (Want to play Shadowrun for PC? Tough, MS forces you to buy Vista for a DX9 game...Same as the constant file format changes between Office versions...) and of course Beryl (http://www.tekforums.co.uk/posts/list/8055.page). :D

they probably like it cause its free.  If you actually buy windows its frikken expensive and adds a lot to the cost of prebuilts.

Personally I loved it for coding.  Was so nice just to pop open a window write some code and be good to go.

As lovely as MS Visual Studio and Codeworks software is it really feels like youre writing inside an application and not coding like it does in linux.  That said now I dont code much and dont need to use crap hardware and have it feel nippy I just use windows and OSX :)

Havent met the community yet. Will do when I get stuck. Im enjoying playing so far - got remote desktop and VNC working so that I can manage works servers - makes it a great little work machine. My boss is eyeing me suspiciously - I dont think hes too keen on me having a linux machine but I really like it.

Fair play this laptop hasnt crashed, stalled, slowed down or in anyway acted oddly since I installed Ubuntu which is incredible! I have to say Im really starting to like it. I dont think it would ever replace Windows as my main rig but its great for the lappy.

I havent booted my WinXP partition in about a month, and whenever I do I get a bit claustrophobic with only one desktop.

Shame I cant get beryl to work on my box, still havent ever managed to get the NVidia hardware acceleration to work :( must be something Im doing thats dumb, but I cant bring myself to care enough about it to get it sorted out.
