Ive just been round to the g/fs, as her mum ordered Orange BB for some reason.
Anyway, I installed the software for the USB dongle (Netgear W111GT I think), then pluged it in..........all good.
I followed the installation for the Orange LiveBox, and it all went fine TBH, which I was quite suprised about. The net worked fine, and there was a good enough signal from the dongle (60-70%).
But, when I rebooted, it wouldnt connect. In the system tray, there is the Windows wireless network connection icon, and the netgear one, they both flash and turn green as if they have connected for about 1second, then go back red with the cross. It keeps doing this. I cant connect with the windows connection with the netgear disabled etc.
The only way I can reconnect back to the internet is put the Orange Live Box CD back in, and install it again, and all works fine. But when it is rebooted the same thing happens.
Any ideas whats maybe wrong?? Ive tried turning off all anti-virus and firewall.
Cheers
can you install in safe mode?
Im wondering if a file is getting overwritten & then restoring on a rebooting
I will have to give it a go on friday when im going back round. Which file do you think is getting overwritten?
right then, i hate the netgear dongles, they are what we call "Utter sh*te".
Go into msconfig and untick the Netgear utility. Then, go into system management>Services and set th status of the netgear services to "Disable". From there you also need to check the Wireless Zero is set to automatic. Then reboot.
rom that point on Wireless Zero should automatically set itself up. If you cant be arsed heading round then do it over Log Me In. I think the LogMeInrescue side of things has a free trial for 30 days. Also when you are clunking round the livebox make sure you set the encryption to WPA only. IIRC these piece of sh*t things use WEP and WPA at the same time, and it doesnt work very well.
Cheers for that Beaker, will give that a try!!
Not sure where any of the settings are on that box, as when I was setting it up, you dont go in to it as such, just run the CD.
IP should be 192.168.1.1 password is "admin" all in lower case. :)
check the gateway address in ipconfig, then type it into the browser address bar to confirm that addy, im in the process of writing up a quickstart guide for our public wiki at work, but ive got an old wanadoo box not an Orange one, so there may be some slightly different settings.
All sorted now!! Thanks a lot Beaker, that was the solution.
no probs, i have to deal with sh*t like that at work all the time. Every router ive used so far has either a WebUI or CLI interface, with the exception of the Apple Airport, you _have_ to install the software on each machine for that bloody thing.
Yep Netgear USB dongles are a Pain, and so are the Orange Liveboxs there utter crap and when i got my Orange broadband upgraded they sent me the free Livebox and i just shoved it in my wardrobe. I just use my Netgear DG834G Router all the way! :D

ooo, dont want to send me a copy of the firmware off the install disk do you? Would be greatly appreciated and mean i can actually put the pics i need in. :D
Seems to work ok for what she does TBH. Plus, she wouldnt get the free phone calls would she liam if she didnt have the livebox, as you plug the phone in to it.
liveboxes in france rock.
the encryption is a cock to connect to sometimes, but generally very stable.
