Been using a borrowed 46" Samsung LCD for the past couple of months which is going back next week. Its got me far too used to viewing on a large HD screen so Ive dived into sale mania and ordered myself a new TV
Pioneer PDP-508XD (http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/products/62/63/413/PDP-508XD/index.html)
Apart of Pioneers new Kuro range which is suppose to have the best blacks.
Only problem is I have to wait till next weekend! Boo hum
How much did you get it for then?
Nice TV tho :)
Even Im struggling to believe how much Im shelling out (so Ill be keeping mum on that ;), suffice to say I went for the cheapest online store I could find, used Quidco and the companies buy now pay in 12 months package, so Ill just need to set some dosh aside for the next few months so it doesnt hurt my pocket too much in one go.
Ive managed to break my hook on spec sheets.
I couldve gone for the LED backlit Samsung for how much I paid with its 500,000:1 contrast and 1920x1080 res.
After actually comparing these screens in the flesh its easy to see why everyone rants and raves about the Pioneer Kuros.
The Samsungs 500,000:1 contrast only comes into play if you have solid black areas, where it stands a better chance of dimming the LEDs. Normal miner black detailing doesnt benefit, so the real static contrast is only 2,000:1. Im sure LED technology will improve with bigger arrays of smaller LEDs, but until then Ive convinced myself its a bad idea to invest in a new tech no matter how cool it might seem. The Pioneer has 16,000:1 static contrast which really shows.
Its not even 1080p! Resolution of 1365x768, but its HD 1080p performance is actually better than every set Ive seen (bar one, the rather crazy top of the line 1080 Pioneer... although you can buy a car for that much).
I think Im going to have to be a bit careful with HTPC use - Im still paranoid about screen burn and retention altough Im being told its not much of a problem on plasmas anymore, especially Pioneers.

I think youll be mightily satisfied with it, I wish I could afford a Kuro.
Retention is more of an issue than screen burn these days, be careful of staying too long on channels with a static corner logo and you should be okay. Im a worrier about things like that, I think Id be watching mostly films on it if I had one and its the one aspect that would still pull me towards an LCD. But the quality of the Kuro screens is still phenomenal.
looks great man - dont worry about the price tbh. As long as you enjoy it its always worth it and youd just kick yourself if you didnt get the best :)

Im planning on going movie mad :) Ive got Ratatouille, Deathproof & Bourne Ultimatum in 1080p waiting to be watched!
I dont tend to watch channels with static logos for hours and hours so that shouldnt be a problem. More concerned about someone leaving it on with Windows desktop, but Ill make sure I have the power management and screensavers setup to combat this.

Aye, Ive been focusing on LCDs for a while, especially with the whole LED thing, but seeing these Pioneer Plasmas in person... wow!
Just making sure I have everything else I need to fully enjoy the screen; should have a wall mount delivered on Monday and want to make sure I dont get any more HD judder so Ive also ordered a Radeon 3870 - dont think Ill be leaving my lounge or a few months ;)

Soopas RPTV or my Plasma? Regardless they both are.

Of course it is, and damn well should be at that price. It will either have to display 720 with a border or interpolate it up and reduce 1080 but that isnt an issue for most screens.
The only issue is that these tend to use more power than LCDs, and especially with LED backlighting.
Thats 1080p projector money tbh. I wouldnt be satisfied with 40 for that amount.

Its not 40" its 50" ;)
Which is big enough for me sitting 10ft away.
Youd need a dark room to really appreciate a projector setup, Im sure the plasma will be getting used during the day time with curtains open.
