Title: Original Xbox +4 games for £50
Post by: Russell on November 24, 2006, 18:02:47 PM
Over on the DVD Forums, someones posted that argos are flogging original xbox for Ã,£49.99 with 4 games for free Forza, Halo 2, Project Gotham Racing 2 & Fable.

I have been mulling over buying an Xbox360 for a few weeks, but I doubt am going to get one any time soon as it costs too much, and Ive never had a console before so am unsure if theyre for me.  So this has peaked my interest just a bit.  Especially with the ability to Mod the xbox and use xbmc, something thats interested me for a while.  Games should be very cheap for it as well so thats good.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?  Good idea yes or no?

seems cheap enough TBH.  Cant see a downside really if you just want something to chill out with.

I think I am going to get one, why not its only Ã,£50 and should come in useful.

Wiis look interesting, but am waiting to see what people make of them over the coming few weeks, want to see if they are just a gimmick or if theyre something a whole lot more.

Ã,£50 is a good price for 4 games even without the console. If you dont mind playing with older tech then go for it ;)

I saw one of these (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11182282&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&N=4008054&Mo=165&No=2&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=25532&Ns=P_Price%7C1%7C%7CP_SignDesc1&Sp=C&topnav=) today, and it just trumps everything, tbh.

Brits generally dont have palatial houses built out of wood and gloop to provide storage space for that though :D

Hmm well quite annoyingly when I went to reserve it through the argos site it said that there was no stock yet there was earlier last night.  Bugger thats what I get for not being more impulsive, could have had it today.  Am sure someone on the dvd forums was saying other places are doing a similar deal, so I shall investigate, and if not wel the home delivery service was showing stock lol.

Get it!! I keep putting off getting a 360 because I have so many games on Xbox (plus its chipped to use as a media center) and I still love it to death after 4 years. BTE playing Fable at the moment and its great!

Well I managed to get one, my parents were going to Hexham, so with nowt better to do I went with them, but just before I went I managed to reserve one at the Hexham Argos so picked one up there.

Had a quick play with PGR2 and Halo 2 and it seemed good, just gonna take a bit of practice to get used to the control system, wheres a keyboard and mouse when you need one lol.

hope you enjoy it mate. the original xbox still has alot to offer. PGR is awesome and if you havent played halo yet you are seriously missing out! I would play halo 1 before you play 2 though.

if you get on Xbox Live ill give you a race somtime.

hmmm thats a whole world of pain! Check out www.x2vga.com but theyre hard has hell to come by and plus youd need to chip your xbox and have it output ntsc to work.  I had one for awhile but it didnt work with my lcd monitor. I just use a high res VGA box @ 1440x900 and it looks great.

there is no official vga adapter for the original xbox

there are unofficial ones but they arent common, you can get break-out boxes that handle lots of different inputs and outputs

that is probably your best bet

Ive got an executor 2 and its great. Fitted a 120GB drive (easy) and install evolutionx and XBMC which is great. Have used it for the last 5 years to stream from my PC and its been great.

They hard to fit?  And does the Executor stop you from playing with xbox live?

Not a huge issue if it does cause most of the time I cba with multiplayer games, but its always best to be able to do these things just in case.

yes and yes ish...

Ive never fitted a chip I had someone else do it but from the instructions Ive seen and stuff you need to be damn good with a soldering iron.

Xbox live - I believe your ok as long as you fit a switch to turn the chip off and then lock the hard drive back to the orginial settings (there is a program to do this) I think your ok then. People - help me out with this as Im not certain.

That was the situation when I did mine but that was a LONG time ago and things might have changed since then.

Oh - and I have never needed or desired to go on Xbox live. PC for online stuff, Xbox for media center and "Ahem" perfectly legal backups of games I already own...

Ive softmodded quite a few xboxs.

5 mins and no real risk.

I didnt want to open my xbox up and im not all that hot with soldering so it was the much easier choice.

I turned on my xbox for the 1st time in ages the other day (dont use it since i have my 360) because i fancied played some fable while flatmate was using the TV in the living room and when I went to download the patch it told me my xbox was banned from live... Dont remember that happening, must of forgot to disable my chip at some point :(

Oh btw everyone, if you want to see my and rivkid adding switches and new HDD to our Xbox click here (http://www.dooms.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=140). Rivkid wanted to be different and add something new (and v. stylish) to his xbox :P oh and yes there was beer involved.

You can get solderless adapters called the Xapt3r, designed for Xecuter modchips.

Though personally Im going to try the softmod route.
