After a look at the trailer I think the premise could be enjoyable, however I have no doubt that the BBC will fluff it up like they do with the vast majority of the programs they produce these days.
The acting will be atrocious, the script dire, special effects dodgy but overused, and it'll try to mimic a much bigger budget production and offer us lots of "drama" and "action" rather than doing something intelligent with the narrative. And they always manage to get good actors working for them as well, so how they make them act so poorly I've no idea. A combination of bad direction and an underdeveloped story I'd imagine.
Most things the BBC do seem to have a faint whiff of Doctor Who about them recently. Very dumbed down, very childish, the budget is used inappropriately and they are altogether not very enjoyable. Very poorly researched as well in places. Everything just seems to come across as a bunch of actors playing at being in Hollywood and camping it up rather than actually acting.
I recall a submarine/undersea BBC drama that was advertised well but was bloody awful to watch last year, this Outcasts looks to be more of the same.
Still, I'll give the first episode a go and see how it is. Fingers crossed!
I have to agree with all that post, I had expectations for Survivors, the submarine one with James Nesbitt which I remember me and Alan watched and found lacking, all the others. You're on the money with the undercurrent of Doctor Whoishness as well I think, they end up being far too dumbed down and lose appeal, they should keep the adult audience targeted the way Spooks and the like did.
I agree, I reckon the concept is worth a watch of the first ep or two though.
Looks good, I'll give it a go.
Odd to hear Jamie Bamber talking in his native English accent.
Yeh it is odd after hearing him talking with an American accent in Battlestar Galatica for so many years. Even though I remember watching him in Hornblower first, where he spoke with an English accent, I still find it strange to hear.
In a similar vein I was certain Lena Heady was an American actress until I heard her on one of the commentaries for The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
so..... was it any good ?
that submarine one started good then went down hill fast... it was like a long series where they ran out of ideas at the end.... but compressed into something much shorter....
As predicted it was rubbish. Nothing actually happened, most of the acting was wooden and they killed off the one good actor at the end of the episode.
That dark haired bint gets right on my wick, I hope she is killed off soon. The whole ship thing was poorly executed too and I find it very hard to believe that after 5 or whatever it was years in space they are on the brink of violent panic because they have to wait a few more hours on arrival to repair the ship so it doesn't explode catastrophically. I'll still watch the second part in ten minutes to see if it improves though!
I agree it wasn't good, I wouldn't blame the actors as such, seen a few of them in other things and have been ok, do think the script they had to work with is just plain bad! really clunky and the story was plain silly at times, did make me unintentionally lol at one point, when they are out in the wilderness and she hears a noise and says "what's that?, his reply "let's turn in!" ...Oh dear did anybody over the age of about 12 read the script before it was filmed? Not watched tonight
I thought that too when that happened  Tonight's was just as irrational at times. Oh well, it's something to watch.
it's certainly a strange program/series lol , missed the first 2 so i had to watch it online
