Title: Password protected area
Post by: Faulky on June 07, 2006, 12:50:54 PM
Hello,

Im helping on a project to get back issues of an not-for-profit independent magazine at Liverpool University online. Were going to use PDF files of each article in each issue. Weve converted them already. What we need is a system that:

a) password protects the area, so people wanting to access it have to give a user name and password that wed have given them at an earlier date; and

b) also protects the files, so anyone searching the internet can find the files, but to view them must enter a password, or be directed to a page through which they can apply for a user name and password.

Its something completely new to me, so I dont really know where to start. Does anyone have any ideas about what to use / how to start / what we need? Or is something like this going to require us buying a product? And if so, what should we be looking at?

Thanks very much for any help offered.

Best,
Jonathan.

PS. Its all change here... I had to re-register. What happened?

Just a forum thing as its different software

To your question, the easy and simple way would be to have the folder with the files in and pasword protect the folder via the host settings, which most have. Depending on your host just look at the settings and options and it should be there.
You then basically when accessing the folder get a input box asking for username and password.

Hello,

Thanks for the replies. I cant see password protect folder option in the host controls, but Ive e-mailed them asking if its possible. It does sound the easiest.

What is htaccess, and can it be used on any server? Is it easy?

Ill Google it, and also have a look at Joomla/Mambo and Drupal or Xoops.

Any more suggestions, or help on htaccess, is very welcome :)
