Title: POST Problems
Post by: Smugs on March 10, 2007, 21:19:58 PM
I seem to be having POST problems, some times and at random the system wont POST all the fans and lights will come on but it wont boot up and I have to switch the system off then back on again.

It seems to be random when it does this and I have no idea what could be causing it?

Any ideas?

id say its....

1) power supply
or
2) mother bord
or
3) memory
or
4) CPU

probably in that order :(

but.... Ive got a shuttle thats been doing that for well over a year now, but it always goes in the end :)

I find setting it to power on when I hit crtl+F1 maked it boot up every time ?.... its a 2nd system so thats good enough for me :)

Any tests I can do to check? Though all the parts are brand new and I wouldnââ,¬â,,¢t have though they would have started acting up already.

my box has been doing this for a while. Its pretty rare, but on one occasion it  took about 5 or 6 goes before it consented to boot.

In my case I suspect its motherboard, because there are one or two other funny things going on, for example it refuses to boot with a DVD writer installed.

all you can really do to test is to start replacing things and see if it goes away.

maybe try memtest86 to see if its the RAM, but my bet would be PSU or motherboard.

Memtest says the memory is ok.

Gah I swear since I put this thing together Iââ,¬â,,¢ve had nothing but problems *swears a lot*.

btw is their anyway to check the PSU is ok or not ? as I donââ,¬â,,¢t want to go and buy a new one then find out it was the mobo or vice versa.

you can check the voltages in the bios....

wont really tell you if its ok, but it can tell you if its defenatly bad....

(it might be an intermitent problem /  apowerup problem thats gone by the time you get in the bios)

but its worth a loot :)

The psu is brand new and a good make (Antec) could it bugger up so soon?

Itââ,¬â,,¢s very random I was testing it earlier and the first time I booted 10 times ok then 1 failed boot then another time I booted 4 times then a failed boot.

Really I have NO idea what to make of it my PC knowledge is enough to build one and fix some problems but with this I dont know where to start.

BIOS voltages are btw.

V Core - 1.28v
3.3V - 3.2v
12.V - 12.1v
5v - 4.9v

those voltages look fine(tho like i said, that doesnt mean its not the psu)

can you borrow a mates psu ?

what power putput is your psu ?
and what do you have in the pc ?

you could try unplugging non-esential stuff, like extra HDs, CD drives, case fans etc... and see if that helps ?

you could also run some benchmarking etc... software in windows for a couple of hours and see if that makes it crash ?

if you cant crash it in wondows, then it points more and more to the PSU or M/B..... but mostly the PSU :)

Its very stable in windows Iââ,¬â,,¢ve played BF2 for hours with out crashes as well as running 3D Mark and Iââ,¬â,,¢ve not had a crash in windows yet its only the boot problem so far.

Iââ,¬â,,¢ve been asking on the MSI forums as well some seem to think it could be the Corsair RAM Iââ,¬â,,¢m using and suggested I up the voltage from 1.9v to 2v, so Iââ,¬â,,¢m testing that atm.
[Edit] Well that didnt work, failed on the 7th boot.

As for getting a spare PSU my old one isnââ,¬â,,¢t compatible and my mate who I would normally turn to in these matters is at Uni so Iââ,¬â,,¢m stuck atm.

PSU is brand new Antec Truepower Trio 550w btw.

Smugs, have you checked the motherboard battery?   Check that it is in or check if the plastic is still on the back, sometimes this happens.  Try pressing the bios chip, may be slightly loose.  Also check for any silver heat paste you may have accidentally blobbed on the motherboard, has happened previously and only affected the boot sequence and not during normal operation.  Other than that it may be the psu.  If you have a boot speech reporter on your motherboard, enable and see what that says.

Id say its defenatly a psu problem of a m/b problem...

...unfortuanatly you can never be %100 on these things :(

does anything "weird" happen with the system ?

any strange beeps, cd drive/hd/floppy going things you wouldent expect etc... ?  even if its realy rare ?
