Title: Premium usenet access - who do you use?
Post by: Kunal on January 08, 2008, 15:13:10 PM
Ive been on Newshostings unlimited package for a few years now but Im starting to get fed up with it lately. Connection is more unstable and tops out far below my line speed.

Does anyone use Giganews? Quite like the sounds of their higher retention and encryption on downloads.

Pipex use giganews for their access, it was much better than the claranet I paid for but the speed was limited to 30K/s.  A friend highly recommends Giganews, you can sign up via someones referal link so the referring person gets a free month or something.

Giganews.
Expensive = Yes
Retention is 6 months+ (I downloaded stuff just before Xmas that was posted in May!)
Completion = 99.9%

been with them now for at least 3 years. Best Ive ever used & Ive been doing this gig for 10+ years

Noob offtopic question, what benefits does this kind of thing have over torrents?

speed. It will max out your connection. Reliability. Early releases. After FTP, Newsgroup is usually the 1st stop before torrents.
Infact, its prob where most torrents get their stuff from.

Use an Indexer like newzbin, binnews, nzbsrus, etc.
search google for NZB

Also you dont have to maintain any kind of ratio or upload anything at all! Its currently under less scrutiny than bittorrents from the law and media making it a bit safer (although newsgroups have recently been receiving more press than before).

If I had a line faster than about 8mb id probably still pay, but as it is im happy with torrent sites.

Hmm, I dont often get more than 200kb/s with a single torrent. Might have to look into it.

Expect a thread :)

you use the wrong servers, private torrents often hit 800 kb/s to 1mb.

tbh, I think Giganews is 200 days retention which is silly.
And regardless of what server/torrent you are on.  Your download speed will be dictated by the upload speed of who you are connected to not public/private server.

ill argue about private tracker, these 3 are from 3 diffferent private trackers.

give the mods babies.

edit, the important bit.

Im on Giganews and love it. I get a constant 1.5-1.6MB/s from my 15Mbps connection.

But the point is that the combined upload speeds on a good private server will always be massively higher than public servers because of they force members to upload unlike public servers.

they make you seed and to hit 1.1 you unstrangle your client, some sites bombard you with leeching email, until you hit 1.1.

edit.

be 24 pro,do 2.5 kb/s up, so 2 seeders giving back 2.5 MB is a lot faster than 200 seeders with strangled clients at 10 kbs

I pay for a premium usenet provider. I can get the same with my ISP, but without the retention.

Some people will happily pay a premium price for reliability, good service &speedy delivery.

Well again thats arguable, I dont pay a penny and same as you I have loads of films, Im lucky my ISP has never restricted me, I often hit 1mb, as you know an average film is 700-800 MB big, down in 15 min, thats fast enough  for me, so Im Very happy. unless you live next door to your exchange your speeds can vary a lot, I hate ADSL2, over the years I tried them all, at least Virgin keep their speeds so my downloads are fast.

also the standard price for 20 MB with VirginMedia is £37.00, I pay no way near that, put it this way the new deal stopped me going to be24.

is that unrestricted, VM havent hit you with this then, Traffic management, LOL you escape the.

There is some overlap in the 3% of uploaders and the 3% of downloaders. Our data has identified that the top 3% of uploaders and downloaders makes up fewer than 5% of all users.

egg, what newsreader program is that screen dump taken from?
im using newsbinpro, its alright but not that user friendly interface

my paid for usenet server (maximum usenet - think they are a resellar tbh) is up for renewall at the start of feb and i have cancelled my auto renewell as connection to their server is up and down like a yoyo sometimes.  considerably cheaper than giganews but i might have to start paying a bit more for better service.

anyone reccommend anyone else other than giganews / astraweb thats already been mentioned here?

Can definitely recommend it.

HITNEWS.EU are offering a 3 day free trial without putting in any payment details if any of you fancy giving newsgroups a try.

go here (http://member.hitnews.eu/signup.php?lang=en)

Fill in all the details, they dont matter as long as your email address is real.

blimey 1.33 mb unstrangled, the new Azereus Vuze, with a Hd player built in and over a 1000 legal downloads,  some are HD, fantastic, have a look, Ill be very surprised, if users say its crap.

the video of the Ghost Rider on the Susuki Hayabusa turbo (499HP) doing nearly 300k on streets is fantastic.
only Azureus Vuze has it.

Edit .The Ghost rider does a wheelie at about 270k, thats crazy.

actually ill post the motorbike in Cars and Motorbikes

I found Vuze very bloated (even more so than the older Azureus). Its ok to open now and again to watch things but to use as your client all the time its just too memory and processor hogging.

Cant beat uTorrent imo.

binsearch.info = a free nzb generator... tick box of what you want, hit "create nzb" voila.

grabit is set up on my system to do exactly the same.

Load up binsearch, find item... create nzb, download, verify, extract, repair... 1 click.

Just enter the info needed.

Server Address = the IP address the usenet provider gives you
port = port for the server
server nickname = anything
connections = allowed connections. Giganews for example allow 9 connections
Login - Username & password given to you by the usenet provider.
