Title: Printer Cartridges
Post by: mrt on May 08, 2007, 10:48:05 AM
Right needs some cheap inket cartridges for a Canon PIXMA ip1500.  Now I normally have always bought original Canon ones, but they are becoming a bit expensive.

Does anyone use any cheap compatibles?

I had a look on bigpockets.co.uk and they have them for £0.50p each, although I am a bit reluctant as they just seem incredibly cheap?

Svp.co.uk have them for £1.30 although they have a review system like ebuyer, and users have either said they are totally crap or really good.  I am confused now.

Someone I work with, said they will be crap and dry out within a couple of days of opening?  Is this true?

Can anyone recommend me somewhere to get some, need to buy them today as I need them tomorrow.  Have not got time to go to refilling place, so thats not of use.

Cheers

cant speak for canon ones but to give an idea of 3rd party...

Ive used 3rd party carts for my Epson R300 Photo for years and its always been fine. Colours are good, no clogging up the printer etc.. I once saw a video that tested them and they tested sheets per cartridge and fade time in the sun etc.. sure the originals were better but not much - and the general consensus was your fine as long as you dont want to leave your prints in the sun for a long time (photos on the wall etc..) Ive tried 2/3 different brands and they were all about the same really.

FYI Ive always got mine from ebay powersellers.

I couldnt imagine paying for originals now.

I have the same printer, and staples do 3rd party versions of the cartridges (or at least they did last time i went). Not as cheap as the ones you mention, but still cheaper than canon ones, and ive never had a problem with them.

3rd party ones are just refilled and cleaned up original parts, you shouldnt have any probs with them but order a few just in case you do get a duff one.

Recycled carts killed my Lexmark X-74, it doesnt print anything at all anymore since switching to them.

I was given a brand new Lexmark a few years ago, great I thought. Then I noticed carts were £20 a pop. Tried a refill and it died. Oh well the refill cost me a fiver so I didnt loose much.

DONT DO IT.

I used 3rd party cheapies in my pixma ip4000.  Thought it was all ok as there was no print head in the carts, so nothing complex to get wrong.  How wrong I was.

The effects werent immediately noticeable, but after a month or two pictures started coming out with weird colour casts and looking unsaturated.  It got worse and worse until it was pretty much printing only in black&white, but with a yellow tinge.  Blocked print head :(

Cue half an hour taking it to bits, cleaning the print head with isopropyl alcohol and hot water, and reassembling with official carts.  Its been printing like it did when I first got it ever since :)
