Title: Printing DOS encoded files
Post by: Gaara of the desert on July 04, 2006, 10:57:40 AM
Hi there guys,

I have a tricky problem for you to solve if you can.  I have some text files which were made a while ago in DOS and are encoded in DOS.  I can open the file in Textpad with DOS encoding rather that ANSI encoding and it looks and is formatted perfectly.

However, the object is to print these files but the printer uses the ANSI encoding and it comes out with loads of crap.

Is there a way of making my HP laser printer print out the DOS encoded files???

Many many thanks,

Rich

IIRC if you change the save option on textpad you can convert from dos to ansi, i know you can convert it from ansi to dos

Nice to see some naruto fans around too

Thanks for the reply.  I can save it in the ANSI format but I want to print it in DOS format because the character set is different and there are a lot of the special DOS formatting characters in there.

Any ideas?

Rich

P.S. Naruto rocks (when there are no fillers!!!)

I think the problem is that you dont have the correct CodePage conversion installed for the file.

Go into Regional Settings -> Advanced and in the CodePage conversion tables make sure you have both 437 and 850 ticked and installed.

437 is MS-DOS / IBM PC and 850 is a Multilingual version of the same codepage.

Then try opening your MS-DOS unicode file in wordpad. Wordpad should *hopefully* realise that it is unicode and do the conversion for you.
