I'm 99.99% sure my psu is dead.... but I don't have spare modern one to try instead...
(just old style ones, 20pin, no extra 4/8pin connector)
problem is... it's my koolance water cooled psu which cost me a packet... so I'd like to be sure before I buy another...
there's loads of little psu testers around... anyone used one ? are they any good ?
with nothing but psu connected, the m/b is lit up (just the onboard power and reset buttons)... when i hit the power button... I get nothing :-(
tried with ram in/out, gfx in/out, fan connected to cpu fan header just incase.... etc. etc. so it probably will be the psu... but with the amount they cost I'd like to be sure (£££ for psu then postage from USA... and they're HEAVY!)
Never tried a PSU tester , i would just buy a cheap (less than£20) PSU & see if that works.
just checked it... and the psu pump wasn't running... never heard it run before, but stick my ear to the psu and there was nothing...
just stripped it down (for the hell of it) and the back of the pump has been rubbing up against someting (can't see what)
it's worn away one of the little brackets holding the back of the pump in, so it wasn't running true... pump is broken (ok if I hold it in)
no chance of a replacment/repair :-(
on the up side.... according to google... I'm the only person on the net who knows what the inside of one of these is like.... (not that it makes me feel any better about it)
I can;t work out what the coolant inside is tho.... I caught it in a jug... exactly 1 litre of it... I thought it would be some kind of thermal oil, but it doesen't feel like it... :o
p.s. a new one is £400 with delivery :s
just bought a Corsair AX850 £150 delivered
but pricey for an air cooled psu.... but it got an editors choice award on silentpc for being so quiet/efficient/etc.... :-)

lol.... it's probably lacking a bit now.... I used to be a bit of a speed junky... especially back in the day when an upgrade to newer tech would make a massive difference to system preformance... these days you can hardly tell the difference :(
(plus I used to bodge/mod/break a lot of stuff when I was younger so I'd have to keep replacing things all the time!)

Didn't you keep the old ones knighty? You could probably get good money for them if you did, and at least you've got an upgrade out of it all. Shame about the PSU though, but just think it's had a long life! It could have gone pop after so long anyway.
Keep the PSU and when me and Bacon come up we can have a look at it, there might be something you can sort.
you can;t take the psu appart wihtout cuttineg wires.... for the watercooling it's basically a square tube with 2 ends on it... I can pull the ends appart an inch or so to see inside but that's about it.....
I *might* be able to super glue the pump back together.... but wouldn;t expect it to last very long... I might as well replace it now while I've got the pc in bits :-(
I'll re-test the old parts with the new psu, and if they're ok I'll build another system around them for my new office I'm building at work :-)

Do you get anything out of the motherboard at all? I think even if a CPU is knackered you will usually get some form of beeps/activity?
erm... I always thought dead cpu = nothing, no beeps etc ?
tested it on the bench with my new psu (and one I just found) only m/b with cpu in, hsf and speaker... nothing :-(
I plugged an led fan in, and when i push the power button, I get a quick flash of light from it before it powers down again.... assuming it's the m/b... but I'll send both back to be tested... (as long as that's ok with them!)
I suggested to Clocked you should send the CPU and Mobo back to be tested, the turnaround could be slow but it would be the cheapest/easiest solution IMO and will save you having to test further by buying further pieces.
I seem to recall having a duff CPU on an old board and the mobo still powered up at least, but gave a long, continuous beep? I'm pretty sure it wouldn't shut off straight away like that, it's probably a duff board. But sending both back for testing is the best bet, after all you can leave the CPU locked in the mobo for sending it back.
