Title: Real World Difference between VGA & DVI?
Post by: Beaker on December 03, 2007, 18:15:55 PM
Right then, im trying to work out if there is actually a massive difference between VGA and DVI connecting my monitor.  I use both at present depending on what PC im using, and ive got identical monitors.  The images on the screen look identical, and there is nothing I can see that is actually better or worse.  At present im using one of the 19" Digimate screen from Aria from about 3 years back when i bought it, im looking at a 20" HP screen, the difference in price is making me wonder because for the HP w2007v 20" (VGA) and the HP w2007 20" (DVI) its about £70 more.

I cant after taking measurements have a bigger screen without losing space for the laptop, speakers etc.

DVI is digital, VGA is analog

yeah, i know the technical differences, but i was trying to work out if its worth forking out the extra £70 or not.  At the moment im thinking it probably isnt.

At the moment im trying to work out which of these I want ::

20" HP

or ::
Sammy 20" with VGA and DVI

Now i know the quality of the HP Screens is great, i used to have one of those HPs on my desk at work.  Ive been told the Sammys can be variable quality.

Reason Im buying in the high street is i dont have to dish out for "dead Pixel Checks".  I can just return it and swap it if there are irritating dead pixels in evidence.

MP Computers will swap a monitor if it even has 1 dead pixel.

Ive always been able to see the difference between vga and dvi connections where the monitor has both; its crisper and more even on dvi imho. I think the difference might be more evident on better monitors (and you have to be at native resolution to see it in the 1st place).

I wouldnt spend extra for DVI unless you see in  Supermanvision. The only good thing is having 2 plugs means you can switch between 2 pcs.

Not running in native probably means youre semi-blind anyway so probably doesnt matter    :P

Well absolutely; but the number of times Ive seen people (ok office-type women) with nice new TFTs running at 800 x 600.....

That rings too true, every time I go to our support office I end up changing the resolution

So so true......

I really narcs me that I create all these wonderful websites at work knowing that 99% of the visitors(Staff) have TFTs capable of 1280x1024, but then they moan that it doesnt look right etc....  And they have their monitor res set to 1024 x 768 or worse

Totally true. Have to normally go in and change my damn display res every time someone else has used my "hotdesk" pc. (hot desk in quotes, as its where I end up sitting, only time someone has used it is when ive not actually been in the office :D).

Apparantly, 1280x1024 is too small for them to see. Christ... these monkeys need stronger glasses, cause 800x600 on a tft looks so sh*t that I am pretty much struggling to make out the words on the screen.
