i need a new router, mine is the one that came free from BE and it sucks...

works ok so Ive put up with it, but I need to be able to block all but 3 mac addresses and it wont let me....

any anyone recomend me something decent ?  I dont mind paying a bit extra for somehting good

Im on 24meg and just over the road from the exchange so i get good speeds and hammer is sometimes.... which makes my spare router crash in about 20 seconds :(

Why do you need to block mac addresses?

to force my brother to use his own connection !

he hammers mine untill the router crashes (think emule going with 500 downloads, and bit torrent going with another 500... all at the same time)

then when mine crashes he switches back to his....  untill i come and restart the router..... means I cant go away and leave things downloading for myself...

he wont cut back on his downloads (i dont care about him using it, just crashing it all the time)

and Im getting too old to bother arguing about it....  I had another phone line put in, and another asdl connection just so i can have an easy, peacefull life :-)

if i can lock it down to a few mac addresses , it should solve all the problems ?

theres a new cisco 877-K9 on ebay ending in a week, if i miss that Ill buy one from a shop

thanks :-)

EDIT/P.S:  is the K9 bit of cisco 877-K9 important ?

As much as I hate reccomending them, Belkin routers apply mac address filtering to LAN as well as to Wifi.

If you take the time to configure your client properly, you wont crash the router.  That said, I use a hateful Netgear DG834N now.
If youre not getting the full line speeds, it would be worth getting a Netgear as you can use 3rd party firmware and adjust your own SNR.
Im supposed to get 1.5mb - 2mb where I am, but I can tailor my line to get the best out of it.

Currently, Im on 4.2mb and 1.4db :D
Im 2.56km as the crow flies, which makes it roughly a 3.5km line.

I know its good, when Ive needed to ring O2 before, the first thing they say when they see the stats vs line length is "WOW"

thats the problem.... I set it up right so it works... and he goes and changes the settings....

hes a bit like a little kid... out of all the options- keep changing his settings / unplug him from the network etc. etc.  the easiest way is just to get a new router... saves any arguments too ;)

I get fantastic speeds.... just it crashes when hes on :(

You have to be careful what you use on BEs network, some routers just plain dont work.  The Netgear 834GT and 834N work fine, Ive used both, and they have working MAC filters.

Edit :: They are also useful to reserve the MAC addys you want to use, and then reduce the IP pool down to those MACs.  Means _nobody_ is going to be able to connect.

Can you not just disabled the ssid from being broadcast?

And change the wireless security code and router password?

knighty

its all wired :(

I wouldn;t mind him using it.... if he didnt crash it all the time :(

So he plugs into your router and crashes it then plugs it back into his?

Its drastic but fill in the spare ethernet sockets with putty and glue yours in :D

That or can you do something along the lines of configuring the router so that it all works for him but the internet is upside down? I remember reading somewhere about someone that did it so his internet stealing neighbours found all the images on all the websites were back to front and upside down :D

knighty

theyre all networked together, 2 connections and all pcs on the same network

thing is.... Im trying to avoide all the unplugging him etc..  itll just go back and forth and end up as little kid stuff...

if he cant connect easily, he will just stick with his own, hes on 12meg iirc so its not like Im cutting him off from the net etc...

cisco router might not even crash with him on it .... :o

Get a proper router and youll never look back. The 877 supports VPN and has advanced security. It has the same adsl2+ chipset as the HWIC-1ADSL line card for the big routers.

Home devices wont even half 1/50 of the feature set.

The only thing letting it down in the layer 2 switchports. But you can get around that kind of by putting each into a separate VLAN.

Ive most of the images for them here too. I can also do you up a working config, but there is also a web GUI if you are so inclined.

Set up a QoS policy so other users are only guaranteed about 5k/second.

knighty

cool.... soon as it arives Ill post back..... most of that went over my head

i must be getting old... a couple of years ago Id google my ass off untill i understood every little feature :o

Bah, opportunity to mess with your bro missed tbh.

Could have spoofed an email from the police saying they had detected large amounts of illegal downloading coming from the household and that according to the information provided by his brother(you) it came from his PC...
