I am finally getting my broadband this week; can someone please recommend a software firewall and some antivirus software - preferably something I can download for free. I used to use Norton but it was so resource hungry that I took it off. Can I just use windows firewall on the machine that will not be doing any p2p stuff? WIll that suffice?
Ideally software which does not need hardly any (if any) interaction. Would love to just leave it update itself and forget about it :-)
Many Thanks

I agree, AVG is rubbish compared to a year ago.
I have also used Bullguard. It is alright, but nowhere near the best. Plus he did say FREE :D
Avast! is fine for all my customers tbh, not given anyone any grief whereas AVG has.
I use F-Secure 2006 and Panda Internet 2006 myself, both excellent products.

TBH you cant really say how good an AV product is unless you can reference some sort of industry test where theyve checked all the products against each other, as it could be the virus that your product cant detect that might get you.
I seem to remember the last time one of these reviews was done, Norton and NOD32 got the highest virus detection rates. The big problem with Norton nowadays is that it wants to take over Windows to the extent that it practically says "let NortonSoft manage your file system (recommended)".
Personally i like Sophos. Doesnt do anything fancy, it just protects against viruses. Though ill admit it isnt cheap.

Yes you can. My customers have problems with AVG and do not with avast. Nothing to do with viruses.
