So I know alot of you love your vinyl so heres the best place to ask!
So I just bought a copy of my mates bands debut 7" record. When I took it out of the sleeve, on the bottom side there was some excess vinyl stuck on it which was all wrecked, but it just pulled straight off. Is this normal?
Anyway, Ive got it hooked up to my E-MU 1820. It has phono inputs. I connected it up aswell as the ground connection and all was ok. Put the record on and played it and the needle scratched really loudly off the vinyl which seems unusal! And the sound was just horribly distorted. I checked the settings on the sound card and the input for the phono and everything was normal but at any level it sounded disgusting.
Am I doing something wrong here? The only vinyl Ive ever played is my Dads old vinyl from the 70s! On his really old record player.
Cheers!
Sounds like you need to set up your deck. A fresh pressed record should sound as crisp as a CD to most ears. What kind of deck ya got?

Thats what Ive got.
The buttons on the front are..
Speed (33 or 45)
Cut.
It should sound nice and clean, if not, and there is damage to the record then complain. TBH using a deck should be really easy.
Hmm, Ill give it back to him and ask him to try it on his player..
Do you have a control record? As thats an old p-mount record player, and theres not much you can adjust. Probably a gimpy stylus.
There are a few OK p-mount carts about. The m92e Shure runs 17GBP and sounds fine.

Assuming thats the problem...
And keep your eye open for a better deck if you want to get into records. Something thats a standard 1/2" mount with a real counterweight.
For the occasional record, what you got with a new cart will be serviceable, and far better than say, those gawdawful "ION USB" jobbers.
Oh its got quite a new "cart" on it. And according to my Dad its good quality too.
Im not really looking to get into records to be honest. Im not really a fan. To each his own I guess :)
There is something wrong with the way the stylus interfaces with the record, no matter what dad says. Look at it under a magnifier and it should look smooth. Check. Make sure no stylus guard is interfering with things. Check. Now set your needle pressure, if its possible with that deck. With the arm in the down position, its a matter of adjusting the counterweight so the thing floats neutral, then by whatever design of the table, add some positive weight. On a p-mount about 3g is fine.
maxi, its going to be easier if he proves the deck is the problem by getting his mate to play the record for him. If it sounds good on other equipment then its the deck, if it doesnt then its the record.
Would be easier if he had more than one record to try though.
Hmm. My M$ natural keyboard is going dodgy, one full line of text and not one space in it :/
Thanks for the advice lads. Ill get some old records out after work tonight and see if they work fine on it. If not, I know the problem!

Fixored, the bar from under the spacebar had jumped out. Also removed quite a bit of fuzz. Should clean it more. Really I should clean it once :whoops:
Its a good idea to check equipment with a known good item if at all possible, then if that sounds good you know your deck is up to spec ;)
How did it go?
