Title: Removable Storage + Dynamic Disks
Post by: M3ta7h3ad on July 24, 2006, 22:37:35 PM
Righty oh...

A while ago I had the click of death from my computer, and after trying to track it down with nothing else plugged in except one hard drive at a time, clicking occurs on every single one.

Sooooo fearing the worst Ive now vowd not to turn any of the damn things on. Except I still have about 20gb of information I need to get off of them. Bit of a problem as they are dynamic disks.

I have a few apps here that say they can recover data from damaged hard drives or scan and repair some errors, sooooo im gonna give them a go, but via usb caddies.

The big question is, can XP pro mount and import dynamic disks over usb caddies (2 caddies so 2 hard drives at once).

Anyone know? or if not, anyone have 2 caddies and 2 hard drives they dont mind trying it with? Please bare in mind, once made dynamic to undynamic them requires a format... so dont do it if you have nowhere to safely store your data. :)

No, I am pretty sure you cannot make a drive that is connected via USB dynamic... sorry.

Cheers

if the drives do die (with click of death before they die)

you can normally get them going for long enough to get your data off by freezing them (stick it in a plastic bag in the freezer and keeping it as cold as possible while you use it :)

lol aye I know about the freezing trick, but its just such an arse about! :D lol. Prefer to just get the data off, do a low level format as I think the heat has just warped the plates a little... hopefully a LLF will allow the heads to reconfigure themselves to the slightly warped plates or something :D Twas what the old drives used to do. :)
