Hi I did a daft thing on Friday nite and spilled some drink over my pc,so now I need to replace my motherboard,so I have decided to get a new sandybridge setup, only problem is Im a total noob when it comes to building a pc,I have stripped the pc and I got cables I not got a clue where they go when I order new motherboard and I have never fitted a CPU before,so is there anyone in Lincoln that could help me to build it,I cant afford a lot but willing to pay for petrol and they can have any of the old stuff for free not sure what damage the spilled drink did so someone could end up with some good parts other than the motherboard I think the CPU might be fine its a i7860 plus some corsair ram so if anyone could help I be grateful.

did your computer go bang/pop/fizz or let out any magic smoke ?

if not... it;; probably be ok once its dried out ;-)

Brian_A

Well it just flashed inside I have dried it out for 2 days and wiped inside, tried it tonite and the fans all turn on,but I have red led lights showing on mb and it wont boot to bios, monitor shows no signal as well,I have stripped it all down now just a empty case,I know it was a long shot to see if anyone local could help but I probaly have to take it to a pc shop for them to do once I get the parts

pcs are like lego. what you need is help from someone on here before you order, cos there are certain bits that fit together and certains bits that dont.

read a bit about sandybridge, work out yer budget and then ask again and im sure a few will post an ebuyer basket with a spec in.

then if you get the bits to york i dont mind building it for you, if you still dont fancy having a go.

A quick fact would be that i7 860 uses the socket 1156 pin design, the new Sandybridge motherboards are 1155 so if you change the board then you will need to change the processor.

It really depends on whether you want to Overclock or not, as some boards will be better than others, but say for instance you went for the i5 2500k socket 1155 which runs stock at 3.2Ghz per core, with just Turbo mode enabled it will run at 3.7Ghz per core which is more than enough for most people.

You also have the option of H67 or P67 motherboard, the latter is generally for more than 1 GPU depending on your setup, the H67 boards are still good but a fair bit cheaper but are limited to the use of 1 GPU (suits me) or the H67 will unlock the Onchip GPU of the Sandybridge processors, if you wanted to save a bit of cash on the motherboard you could essentially follow the H67 route and disable the Onchip GPU if you have a separate PCi-E GPU.

AFAIK.

Mattscott has just upgraded to Sandybridge and im about too, not decided yet on what to get myself.

Hi thanks for your advice,i have spent the last 2 days reading about sandybridge,if I not damaged my pc I not have known about it,I was just going to get the same again as I had,but reading up on it I thought might as well upgrade to the new stuff seeing as I got to replace it.I gave decided Im going 2600k and either a asus  deluxe or msi gd65 as I have 2 5850 already just pray that I didnt blow them up as well reason for them boards is they support better crossfire,as for overclocking I never done it,but this seem to oc so easy with this new bios that even I can press a button lol Im not going to be bench testing but 4.4ghz would do me,I also found out I can use my h50 as the bracket is the same as the 1156 so saved me a bit of money,as for building it I like to try but I have never done it,i read the manual on my motherboard and I just couldnt understand where all the cables go to which socket and I not fitted a CPU,I know it easy to some and if shown I be fine I just dont feel confident to do it on my own,I just need a guide to point me the way as u not know if I but stuff in the right place or not,and I cant afford to muck it up its taking all my savings and disability money to replace, but any help is much appreciated.sorry if there is spelling mistakes having to use my mobile to post etc and for some reason this forum keeps refreshing the page every few sec took me half hr to type this lol

Where are you ordering the parts from? Tekheads?

Why not give them a call and ask them if they would build for you for a price? It wont take an experienced builder long to throw it together.

Failing that, just goto any computer store, they will offer the service, PC world are expensive though btw so find a local independent shop for better price.

Just read that link guess no fix yet,its dam hard to type as it keeps zooming back to the top, just looked also and they out of stock on the cpu and no bundle package either.so might have to purchase elsewhere now as i need pc for my voluntary work I do for bhf and fed up using my mobile to brows the net and cant play my games.i

It doesnt matter about the link, there is a new post in General Discussion, a new forum is currently being worked on (i.e right now) that will iron out the bugs.

Not all the online stores will have stock of Sandybridge yet, i know Novatech have built up some full computers but only seem to sell processors, but Aria has both CPU and motherboars available from stock afaik

Ah thanks for info,I know I can get the stuff from ocuk they have plenty in stock at the mo,plus bundle deals, still would have preferred tekheads cos they local to me,but dont want to be without a pc for weeks thats all .

Shaun

I would wait a few days till other supplies have stock  OCUK are price gouging for a change!  ;D the CPU alone is 20 quid more than Aria.

I would have a go at building it yourself, there is plenty of good tutorials on Youtube  :)

Had a quick flick threw his tutorial's and they seem quite good.

I wonder if he has bought from OCUK before also? :P

My money would defo go with Aria at this time, but its worth waiting to see what others do once they have stock.

I'd only buy from OCUK if the product was completely unnobtainable elsewhere  :-X

Aria do have them in, but they are selling out instantly, I pre-ordered an Asus P8P67 and i52500k and they have  just been signed for by my neighbour  :-*
