Apparently tommorow morning at 9am we will see a press release circulating that the new Xbox will have a BluRay drive by Xmas

Priced under the current Elite model.

Source Kotaku

I cant say im surprised, i read a rumour back along that MS had already registered a patent for this, after the HD-DVD, BluRay fiasco.

Hmm, announce it the same day as iPhone 2? Doesnt sound like good timing to get the message out.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo... Again.

Bacon

Considering its only June, i dont think they will have a problem getting the msg out before xmas :P

True, but considering its only June it would be an awesome way to kill 360 sales for six months.

Id offer dollars to pesos this isnt true.

If they are an extra bolt on that interfaces with *any* X-box 360 its more likely to encourage people to buy one than not.

If its a single inclusive unit then I would suspect M$ would keep their mouths tightly stitched up.

Cypher

I was under the impression that the Product Line manager of 360 catagorically denied any intention to develop a BR drive the X-Box several times in the past.  This would make more sense consider Microsoft seem to really pushing the online download boat with their Markeplace.

...not that I dont want it to happen.  Preferabbly a new built in unit while they sort out other hardware issue in the process.

Bacon

I think if they ever do decide to go with Blue ray it will be a standalone unit, from a business point of view selling it as an addon will probably net them more profit.

They might even be able to utilize some of that dead stock hd-dvd standalones they have by converting the internals to blue ray :P

This seems the sensible way to do it.

I dont think they will let Sony have the "Our console can play Blu Ray and no one elses can" cake for ever. Its a PS3 > XBox point which there is no reason for them to allow to persist.

Probably but then they said if the demand is for it they will consider it and you will see a lot of us with the hd-dvd stand alone moan that they can not get access to the new feature so they will do be it same time/before or after.
As you say there will have hd-dvd shells a plenty I bet so they could use them.

Probably all still fake going on a couple of peoples opinions on these forums mind :P

Bacon

Rumour was confirmed as fake before 9AM this morning :P

But still, it will happen sooner or later.

^ Nah.

All (and I mean everything) that you read / hear coming from MS / Xbox regarding this topic is that they are more than happy with the amount of money they are making from Digtal Downloads and that this is the direction theyll be going. (They are releasing a tool in June that will sort out the DRM porting problems people have moving between consoles.)

Why would they bother putting the money into a device that they have to license when they can just print money by selling downloadables ?

Mark

If 10 people were to buy a bluray player for the 360, that would take world sales of bluray players up to what - 14 or 15 ?

They MIGHT even break the 20 discs sold barrier by August

Serious

Blue ray sold a lot more disks than HD-DVD, only problem is there isnt the user base yet. In a poll only 9% of Americans with HDTV said they were going to buy a blueray player.

I think these decisions were based solely on uncertainty, being that HD-Dvd and BluRay were both contenders to who would take the top spot. Now HD-Dvd is out of the picture, and in time, most likely a timescale of a few years as we see BluRay push itself firmly into the market, i.e. mass produced discs are circulated into the market, to include budget / lower priced titles making it and accessible option for people of all walks of life, and cheaper more mainstream players, dvd will eventually slip off of number 1 spot, much like the Betamax > VCR changeover, and VCR > DVD changeover.  Now that HD-Dvd is going (soon to be gone) BluRay will be the only choice.

I know for sure i wont be buying a standalone BluRay player unless its cheap, cus im cheapskate, and the fact that i can get the discs cheap, or its part and packaged with a console, but that means i will be buying one, just not an expensive one :P
