An android app sugestion from me :) An app that makes it possible to use the android as a remote keyboard for a htpc (arrow keys etc.)

He has tried both but want something better i.e something that mostly simulates a remote but which can be used as keyboard if necessary

do you know what software he uses as his media player?
Its more likely that it needs to be built for the software.
I know theres a remote available for Apple TV, popcorn hour & squeezeboxes for example.

On both Andriod and IOS there are some really great apps.
There are all these for android just for boxee:

Quite a lot of them as well.
I got a nice one for my Iphone for windows that handles just about all the top players like vlc and foobar2000
