Title: Sat Nav
Post by: FuMaN on December 29, 2006, 21:47:37 PM
I got a TomTom One for Xmas but Ive never really taken interest in them. It says I can get traffic reports but I need a wireless connection, for example using my phone. Isnt there another way round this, this is a really useful feature to and from work but I dont fancy racking up a massive phone bill.

My dad picked me up from London friday before christmas and he had used it as an excuse to get a TomTom One... I was playing with it most of the way back up to midlands and its a great little device! Much better than i thought sat navs would be.

Shame i havent played with the wireless stuff to give my imput on that :(

I got a TomTom one for Chrimbo too, so far all Ive got for mine is a John Cleese voice, a silent voice that only says when your coming to speed cameras (I think havent had a chance to test it yet) and I got a couple things off ebay for it too.

A Carry Case (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190066200782) and a Mains Charger (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190065929822)

Would be great if you could get some sort of dongle to get the traffic for free, especially since my phone doesnt have bluetooth.

Well AFAIK, the traffic updates thing is a premium service and you have to pay annually for it. You also need an active GPRS connection from a mobile phone with bluetooth. Like you said, if you dont want a massive GPRS bill, an option would be to go with a T-mobile contract where for Ã,£7.50 a month, you get unlimited internet usage on your phone.

You may aswell just buy an MDA Vario 1/2 or something similar and get tom tom for it. Thats what Im doing.

Currently Im using Tom Tom Mobile 5 on my Nokia N70 with the bluetooth GPS device (Ã,£40 off Ebay) Works wonders!

^^

yeah, if you do it that way... but there is some sort of dongle thing thats not really made for a tomtom that you can use which will update it with trafic info. fir you... (for free)

I cant find anything about about them now tho ! :(

before I bought my tomtom I read a couple of reviews, and in one of the reviews a guy was using one :o

I think knighty is talking about the TrafficMaster service(the blue cameras you see on bridges and at the side of the road)`. My car has it built into the trip computer is quite usfull, but most the time it picks up the traffic too late and you get stuck in it anyway.

just got it to work :)

have to vavigate to poi, then just choose anything, then pick "favs" (my home made poi catagory) than I can just pick which ever one I like :)

plus... Ive just noticed that bacause I got all the speed camera settings free with my first one Id be able to copy them to my other one (very easily) and to any other tomtom too.... not that I would sent them to just anyone who pms me ;) ;)

Hmm.. I really need to find an up to date version of my maps! Theres loads of things around Durham that have been changed that could cause problems with Tom Tom.. Like taking the backroads leading onto the A167. It still thinks youre able to go along there to turn right but theyve blocked it off now.
