Sata2 is backwards compatible as far as i know

the power adapter is totally dependant on which drive you get, i have some with and some without the old style ide connector

you can buy adapters easily enough though for old ide to the newer sata style adapters

SATA-II is fully backwards compatible. To get true SATA-II performance you also need to use SATA-II capable cables.

Why did the devise a new power connector when so many drives ship with the old one or both?!

IIRC they changed the power and added 3.3v. So had to change the connectoer and make sure you put it in the right way as to avoid confusion.
