Title: Seems my HD is dying... :(
Post by: Serious on February 21, 2007, 20:12:02 PM
Looks like its time to buy a new 250GB SATA drive to replace the old 120GB. Even though the old one isnt even half full its causing crashes and stoppages. Wonderful things, you buy one and when it breaks down four years later you buy another one, thats twice the capacity and half the price.

Maxtor have gone poor.
Ive had more maxtor failures in the last 3 years than anything else.
Looks like they are back to where they started.

so far I havent had an early failure with a Maxtor, this is the first one to actually go wrong. Getting another as they are cheap, if it goes they can repair/replace it.

Technically they are seagates now

Hopefully itll only be a matter of time before the maxtors get booted out the door.  Seagate all the way though, the 5yr warrantee speaks for itself.

I buy Seagate now but I have been faithful to Maxtor so far. I have 6 of them and they are great.... hwoever I cant trust them to much if I have them in mirrors :D pair of 160gb, pair of 250 and a pair of 80gb... still, they are good drive so far as I can tell.

The only drive I will avoid are Hitachi (IBM) and in days gone by Fujitsu.

There is no conclusive winner/loser in the amount of drives I have people come to me that need replacing, Seagate/WD/Maxtor/IBM they all have their own stories to tell.

Interesting article here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6376021.stm

Aye, my first one was killed by the MB in the night, the second indeed was bad, and the third is great so far. So just one actual bad drive in five years. Id buy one again at the right price.

I used to lust after a 512Mb quantum fireball drive back when I had a 170MB one...

------------------------

Looks even worse than I thought, cant get the drive to image onto a second and the backup image I have is corrupted

Unfortunately hardly worth it, a 120GB drive new will set you back at the most Ã,£36.

[edit]

After some nasty problems I have managed to copy the system over to the spare 120gb ide drive and its working, if a little sower than the SATA :)

Theyre all the same, you get some good some bad.  Think Ive used every current HD manufacturer now.  Only drives Ive had die are the IBM 60GXP, 75GXP and 120GXP.  My current Hitachis have been great.

Had two of the IBM 60GXp goes, couldnt be bothered sending back the second one, so put it on the stove and set it on fire, after smashing it with a hammer.

Hitachis are very good/fast these days, dont let the Deathstar farce put you off recent drives.

Seagate FTW

havent had a Maxtor in the last 3 years which hasnt been dodgy to some extent or another, although the Maxtor 120G in my system at the moment has settled down since I water cooled it. Perhaps they just dont like getting hot.

Still, I buy nothing but Seagate now, have never yet had one fail and dont see the point in faffing around with anything else.

The present one is more than a year older and has baan working as the second drive in the compy. i copied everythng off that onto my USB drive and then cloned the SATA onto the IDE. Both are Maxtors, as have been most of my other drives. I have had 2 deathstars fail, click of death, but this is the first Maxtor.

When I first tried to copy it trueimage reported a fault at 5% copied. chkdsk crashed at 25% and on restart the drive didnt even appear in the bios. I thought that was the end for it. couple of hours later cooling down and it booted OK. got it to run all the way through on chkdsk then found that I had to find the IDE drive and partition it before I could have another go at copying. This time it worked.

The SATA will probably still work, but can I trust it and how long for

i thought one of mine was failing, turned out to be the power supply going outta spec.

btw, i use getdataback to copy stuff off dead / dying / corrupt from partitions or drives, worked twice so far when ive forgotten the 137gb reg key in W2K installs, doh!

I started with Maxtor...wanted something faster....
Then Fujitsu...wanted something bigger...
Then IBM...boring and slow....so went to
SEAGATE
Never looked back.
I do have a mirrored pair of Samsung IDE drives for sensative/critical data.
Otherwise I just love the Seagate Barracudas SATA

new drive up and running OK - although I took my time over it.

[edit]
Checked the old one with maxtor powermax and it says its OK, so it can stay in as second drive.

Could just have been overheating serious.

I removed two hard drives from my computer and fitted a few more fans. Now my computer will stay up, programs dont crash, and my hard drives no longer get really really hot, or make wierd noises.
