Just want some advice and I know we have some wireless experts on here.
I have 3 wireless APs in my flat (Has terrible walls) 2x802.11G and one 802.11N.
The N is really just for faster transfer speed when in the living room, and the two Gs cover the rest of the flat.
Currently they have 3 different names, If I name them all the same:
Will it swap without issue to the best network?
Will the N router have issues with this as 5 Ghz?
Would I have to ensure different channels to stop interference or would they need to be the same so they are seamless

As far as I know, set both of the gs to the same ssid, same encryption but different channels, and laptops will pick whichever is stongest fairly seemlesly.

For what you want to do, you really need a proper managed wireless platform. I have a trapeze MXR-2 at home (although I do get this gear for free as we are a reseller and I am the only one in the company with the trapeze certifications) and 4 x 802.11n access points. (MP-432s), that enables me to set up a mobility domain, roam between access points seamlessly, and I can broadcast something like 32 SSIDS per radio (each AP has an 80.11a, and 802.11b/g and three (3x3 MIMO) 802.11n radios). I can also put an access point anywhere and set up a proprietary VPN tunnel (A TAPA tunnel) between my wireless LAN and wherever I deploy the other AP. You can set up mesh networking pretty easily too.
I have an SSID for VoIP, one for data, and one for a mesh out to the garage. Also have a guest WLAN using trapeze smartpass.
If youre willing to spend a few hundred quid, you could probably pick up some of the generic branded trapeze access points (the ones branded as enterasys - are the same ones) and an MXR-2 mobility exchange on ebay. Most 3Com is also rebadged trapeze.
With home dumb gear, the best you can do is set the order of preferred networks, assuming you use wzcfg service.

f**king hell your home setup is more elaborate than our Aruba / Amigopod setup we use for business!!
X what the hell have you got lead walls? Ive been able to get by with just a crappy BT Homehob in my last 2 homes (3/4 bed houses) and the house before that was over 3 floors and that only needed a slight boost to Linksys!
Same ssid and security settings should work.

Rivkid - Im sure there is lead paint being used... It does sound a little over kill on my setup, but my Main G AP is my router (Running DD-WRT) next to it is my N AP just so I can transfer quicker.
The Second AP is at the opposite end of the house in my flat mates room, as he has a wired connection in there anyway for his PC, and I had the extra router anyway, I could probably make coverage a little better by moving things around, but CBA to run the wires, so both are at either end of the flat, I can actually get reception on the Main G Router over the house just is a little flakey at the far end.
Just getting annoyed at different APs having to be selected as defaults to the main AP as it is higer in priority even though I am next to the other AP with better signal.
@Mark: I was waiting for your hard sell ;) I would love to have a setup like yours just for pure nerd factor, but I already have the APs and really would be a waste of money upgrading to trapeze etc. and realisitically I prob wouldnt know how to config them or use even 1% of their potential. My router with DD-WRT gives me loads of features that I dont use but some that I do... i.e. VPN/BW monitoring/WOL etc.
will give it a try on the G APs and use seperate channels see how it works

have you tried changing the antennas
Used to have a WRT54G with foot long antennas, my newer one is much better, to be honest I have both set-up and it works well, just wanted to set it up so I can get seamless signal throughout the house. I gave it a quick try and still found it connecting to the main router, so guess I am going to keep them on seperate names, at least I can ensure it is connected to the best AP then. I might be moving in a couple of months anyway now, so not that bothered.
Ideally, you want a device that operates with 3x3 MIMO on 5GHz
5GHz has more non overlapping channels, and has the potential for much greater bandwidth.
The MIMO helps to increase range a great deal as well - particularly from combining reflected signals.
