Anyone got any tips on silencing the xbox360, other than the watercooling method?
Im planning on using dynamat and rubber gromets like the engadget article, and changing the back fans for some direct fit replacements, but anyone else got any other tactics that keep the thing still looking stock?
Put it inside of a mini-fridge.
No suggestions, only a warning...
I am convinced that when you send your 360 in for service all they do is swap the innards with a new/refurb unit. Therefore keep the stock stuff in case you have to send in for repair.
The loudest part of my 360 is without a doubt the drive and there is sweet fa I can do with that :(
Yep, its defiantly the dvd drive thats the noisy bastard.
I dont think my xbox is going anywhere like that, as you see...Im a firmware scallywag.
I suspected as much ;)
In that case, the best thing you can do is get the noisey git in a purpose built, sound proofed cabinet !!
Hmm. Might just see how much of a difference dynamat makes.

To the sound, FA.
To the temperature, loads.
You have a volume button on the TV for a reason. Use it.
If you can hear your Xbox over your TV, then clearly, the TV is not loud enough.

Heh this man speaka the truth!
The dvd drive is hella noisy, I honestly cannot think of any other dvd hardware that comes close.
Its fine in games and most of the time on DVDs but every so often you get quite bits during a film and the wuring over takes! :P
buy a seperate DVD player theyre not expensive and it prolongs the life of your DVD drive. Watching DVDs fried my Xbox (originla) drive over time and now its really poor. Must replace it at some point.
I put mine in another room. That keeps it quiet.
can you chop out the drive? surely its a standard industry laptop dvd drive or something
has special firmware for copy protection methods afaik
The drive is paired to the xbox so you cannot just replace the drive like you could on the original xbox. IIRC the dodgy firmwares available still require something from your xbox360s firmware so it can remain paired up with it. However, that may have been initial releases and could be very different now.
Oh me, oh my :o

My Wii is
no-where near as loud as my 360, the difference is insane. God only knows how they arrived at these results!
Thats pure sh*te - my Wii is as quiet as a mouse I would never dream that the noise it makes would be a problem.
I concur with the above, Wii makes so little noise in comparison its untrue.
Weeelll...
My original 360 was whisper quiet, even the drive was close to silent...
...then I got the 3 red lights, sent it in for repair and got sent back a hurricane in a box :o
So I was guess that the results from that "scientfic" test were done a box like my original one.
someone also pointed out... Wiis got a noisey HDD?? What HDD?!?!
My Wiis DVD Drive was noisier than my Xboxs Samsung...
Guess it all depends on what drive you have...
Just bought a talismoon blue fan to hopefully shut my new 360 up, it seems to be a little more whiney than my old dead one :?
MS have started shipping the 360 with a new BENQ DVD drive that is reportedly "a lot quieter" than the originals
