Title: Sky scrap sky+ subscription
Post by: Rivkid on June 18, 2007, 12:39:22 PM
Hope this isnt a repost!

After endless speculation and rumours, it has been announced by Sky that from the 1st of July the current £10 per month Sky+ subscription charge is to be removed for everyone who subscribes to a Sky Digital TV package.

Previously, the Sky+ service was only free for those customers who subscribed to the Movies and/or Sport Mixes, and also for Sky HD subscribers.

The upcoming change will mean that all Sky Digital TV subscribers with a Sky+ STB will be able to enjoy the Sky+ PVR features without an additional subscription.

However, customers who do not subscribe to a Sky Digital TV package, and only receive free-to-air and free-to-view channels on their STB ("Freesat from Sky") will still be subject to the £10 per month charge if they wish to have Sky+.

There is an FAQ on this from the "Sky+ Team" at digital spy .

The Sky website does not yet appear to have been fully updated with this change. The "How to get Sky+" section still says that the Sky+ subscription is only free for Movies/Sport subscribers, however the Sky Shop now lists the Sky+ subscription as "Free" if you add two or more standard Mixes to your selection, instead of only if you add the Movies and/or Sport Mixes.

Whether this change will cause Virgin Media to rethink the pricing of their V+ HD PVR service remains to be seen.

V+ costs £10-£15 per month, depending on TV package. Although, unlike Sky+ (£99) and Sky HD (£299), there is no charge for the STB, as it is provided as part of your subscription.

taken from avforums - I checked sky website and it is also mentioned.

Thought this happened June 1st & not July
Makes no difference to me TBH.

I got access to nearly every channel worth having for a monthly subscription of £0.00.

The Wonders of Card Sharing & the Internet eh?

So Rivkid, could I order Sky+, but with the normal free box....then aquire a sky+ box cheaper off ebay.....then sell the normal sky box on ebay, and just simply plug in the sky+ box etc? Would I have to have the sky+ box while the sky engineer is there, or just plug it in later on when I get it?

Cheers

Well firstly Im no expert - Im just going on what Ive been told. Personally I think Ill buy one from sky and get fitting and warrenty chucked in - I never minded the cost of the box it was the monthly £10.00 that I refused to pay so now thats gone Ill def go for it.

If you have a look around some sky/cable forums though they do seem to suggest you can just add your own box later.

YOu cant get off ebay becuase they have to do the silly activitation check if you go to sky+ for the first time and you pay the installation fee and they either do the offer or for the free box or £100 depending on the offer they doing at the time But they sign off for it when they installed, get your own box  you can not get anything without being dodgy side of things if you going to sky+ service via phone etc your order the box and the installation with it.

Yeah, to be honest if I do get it again when I move, think ill do everything legit anyway. As Id pay the £100 no probs, but i was the same as you Riv, I didnt want to pay the extra tenner a month.

The £10 is only waived if you sign up to Skys Basic monthly subscription package. (£15 cheapest?)
Not just sign up to sky for a viewing card.
