Is it the same sorta thing as VOIP? And whats a good cheapy handset?
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Eggtastico

skype is to VOIP as hoover is to vacuum cleaners

Shaun

I use skype a lot has really taken over from MSN for me and my mates, family...etc.

I just use a desktop mic and the comps speakers, if you can get nearly everybody you know to install it you save a fortune on call and it good for about 4 or 5 people, so great for online gaming with a few mates etc.

Pete

Can you get wifi or cordless ones?

Computer to computer is free, computer to landline or mobile you have to pay, I've never used it so couldn't comment on the prices.

Got this in an email from SVP today:

Linksys Cordless VOIP Internet Telephony Kit - £6.99

Excludes delivery (around £5 min i think). Login to get that price. Cant comment on the quality but its got to be worth a poke at that price!

EDIT: Ive just ordered two for under £20 delivered. Hopefully cut phone costs to the missus while im in London for me internship

LOL.  I recently ordered a similar model that was £50 from our suplliers.

Its a good piece of kit.  Very easy to setup.

Tom, Joe has that phone paid £60 for it iirc last year.

It only works with skype, which rather sucks.

That said I have a linksys pap2 hooked up to my router, and a dect cordless phone hooked up to the pap2.

Proper voip (sip), cheaper than skype, and a proper number that doesnt cost anything :D

Also because I have a geographical number that is in the Cardiff area it means friends and family get it in their free call bundles, regardless if im in Australia (same cardiff number) or just down the road.

www.sipgate.co.uk I use them - Top up as and when I need it but at just over 1p (1.1p to landlines 9p to mobiles) its few and far between.

Linksys Pap2 - £25 on ebay.
Dect Phone - £5 from gumtree

Sorted.

Other bonus is that with wifi, and SJPhone on my XDA orbit II I can also take calls and use it for calls when im out and about if needs be. My nokia N80 even allowed me to do that.

Best thing being, I dont need my computer on at all to use my pap2 and dect combo... hell even configuration can be done using IVR and keycodes.

Edit: Sipgates Tariff

If J Edgar proceeds the word hoover... maybe.

Skype != VOIP.

May as well say MSN voice chat is VOIP for all thats worth.

Hoover is a brand name of vacuum cleaner that has become synonymous with the product, just as Skype has to VOIP. However they are not the same thing. Im pretty sure you two are agreeing  :w00t:

Id be fairly annoyed if those phones only worked with Skype but im sure i can live with it. Pap2 sounds good, save my missus having to turn the PC on before we spoke.

Im another user of sipgate. Whats good is that you can get your own phone number with any area code (use full if you want to pretend you have  a weekend retreat or playboy studio in london)
Even got to choose my number - so I got me a good one :oD
Setup fring on your mobile & it can all go through sipgate

yeah they only have skype. They connect using USB to your pc. Just its a "dect" skype phone, as I understand it.

lol @ your interpretation, man youre so deep! :d that flew right over my head.

im with eggtastico... chose my number, its fairly easy to remember and one of the only ones I know that actually starts with a 0. :)

02920 00... :D
