Title: SMTP Server name help - BT Internet
Post by: mrt on August 08, 2006, 10:02:43 AM
Hi,

A mate of mine is sharing his internet connection with his neighbour.  Now he uses some Christian Charities Mail account which provides him a POP/SMTP server setup.  However, the internet connection he is using is provided by BT Internet, although apparently they block you using any other mail SMTP servers other than their own?  This means we need to change the outgoing mail server to the bt internet one.  Now does anyone know what this is as mail.btinternet.com and mail.btopenworld.com does not work?

Many Thanks

I think youve got that a bit back to front m8.

It is more likely that BT stop people who are not on a BT connection from using their SMTP server.

Either way, you should find the SMTP server settings here:

Its a bit hard as I am not in front of the machine.  Although, I remember that when I used to have BT Internet myself and wanted to send mail out using Outlook for my standard Yahoo account (i configured Outlook to download from the online account) I had to specify the bt smtp server for outgoing mail - it refused to allow mail out via the yahoo smtp server specified in the settings.  Does that make sense?

I think BT these days prevent smtp directly out unless you specify it to stop you spamming out of their address space.
