Title: Sony Being stupid Yet again
Post by: neXus on October 20, 2006, 12:44:38 PM
My god you could write a book about the cock ups they are making with the playstation 3

http://gaming-edge.blogspot.com/2006/10/sony-clarifies-some-ps3-controller-talk.html?doh

QuoteThough theres still so much up in the air about the PS3 still, the controller is really one of the hot button issues.

There was an update today, based on Japanese tech site Broadband Watch.

According to the report, the controller will have to be paired to the console via the USB cable before play. This pairing process will be required each time the console has been shut down and turned back on, or - given the rough translation - possibly every time the controller has lost power.

Its unlikely that putting the console into standby mode will cause a reconnection requirement, if its console-related. Its also unlikely that many of those lucky (?) enough to get a launch PS3 are going to want to leave it on, even powered-down, 24/7.

Those wondering about battery life will be happy to note the controller is expected to get about 30 hours of playtime out of one 2.5 hour charge. As the battery isnt replaceable, when its no longer recharging the controller needs to be replaced or sent for repairs.

Does either option seem especially appealing?

Have sony just given up now?

are they trying to make the worst console possible to set a benchmark so low the next one will seem like the best thing since sliced bread, even if it is crap too?

Are they even going to think about making another console?

I dont see why they dont just give up now, and just write off the damage it has already done. There is no point in flogging a dead horse surely?

oh well....

I read the thing about having to connect the controller each time you boot up on another site, then they added an update saying that the source had not been translated correctly and what the original site said was that you have to connect the controller via USB the first time you use the controller with the console so that it syncs it to the console. Then when you turn it off you just press the Playstation button on the joypad to turn it on, it does not need to be hooked up every time it is turned on.

I do think that not having replaceable batteries was a stupid idea though. I have the quick charge kit for the 360 and always have a full battery ready for when the one Im using runs out. This is great as it means I never have to have a cable going to the console.

Another thing they dont make clear is if they mean it takes 2.5 hours to charge when not in use. If so, then how long will it take when charging and being used.

Becuase hes a tit and just qouting the japan price which is very cheap and only going to be cheap in Japan and did a conversion most likley when in fact even if it was japan price you always add a load on, 50-60 quid a game

PS: Probably one of the biggest sigs I have seen in my life :/

That is the "cost of UK nationality tax" inflation

aka

C.U.N.T inflation

that all electrical companies have to abide by

you would think the games would get cheaper if they are going to put "active" advertising in them as well.  I dont want to be bombarded by adverts while playing games, if i want someone to try and sell me something ill ring up a double glazing company and ask them to head round for a chat.

Tbh, I dont fully understand the criticism of game prices.  We have allready seen games on the 360 @ Ã,£50.  Fable was Ã,£49.99 when it was released.

There have been a lot of rumours indicating release games at around Ã,£32.

It isnt so much the cost of games, it is just the massive disparity between games prices here, europe, america and especially japan.

The price of games in the uk is extortionate in comparison to america and japan.

Disposable controllers now thatââ,¬â,,¢s an original idea, though a completely stupid one at that.

they will replace them, no doubt at a nominal charge of say Ã,£20 a pop.  Lithium batteries charge fast, thats a good thing, but when the degrade they do so all of a sudden.  Who else here has had a mobile phone that has worked perfectly, then all of a sudden one day refuses to even charge?

This is a wonderful scam, Why not just use normall PP3s or AA batteries as per the WiiMote?

I think ms have won on the batter front, you can either use AA batteries or buy a rechargable battery pack. The rechargable packs arent that expensive and ms have multiple methods for charging them.

definately the best option i have seen for any handheld device

Yep, they were testing to see if they really had the product available before they sued, would have been pretty pointless otherwise.

This was a long time ago, and surely only 1 person would need to do that rather than a random selection of directors from different departments.

PS3 goes on sale in Japan with just 100,000 available, some stores have had to resort to lotteries to find some reasonable way to sell them. ques of up to 1000 people have been waiting for some shops to open.

BBC are a little slow. The number for Japan was dropped to only 80,000 about a week or two ago.

Just a little tidbit for people, The PS3 will not upscale your games.  So what?  If you have an old HD TV that does 1080i but not 720p then you are up a creek without a paddle and will be relegated to SD resolution.  Xbox360 will upscale your game to the desired resolution, the PS3 will not.

Thats a good kick in the nuts.

Whered you read that?

Only info Ive heard about it not upscaling was to do with PS1 and 2 games. Id have thought PS3 games would output to whatever you set the output on the console to.

Some are already available for resale on the grey market (read ebay, second hand) for up to 4 times the release price...

Some got unemployed Chinese to cue outside and paid them if they managed to get one.

Supply and demand, if you have the money/time to get hold of them when there are none then you can name your price because you are the only supplier.

Sony are doing pretty much the same thing

Eeek, the loss per console figures made:
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35784

QuoteThe analysis reckons that the combined material and manufacturing cost for the 20GB version is $805.85 and $840.35 for the 60GB version/ That means Sony makes a big loss on each PS3 it sells.

QuoteBecause of this, the Playstation 3 is a great bargain, well worth its $599 price and $840.35 cost

They know that, they have reported so, its some company reviewing the cost of the content of the machine over the price and nothing more.
Its the loss more then any comment which is the important thing I was linking

and no mention of lack of upscaling, backwards compatibility f**k ups, whether or not it will burn your house down etc...   not a useful article really.
