Sony have gone bonkers, they really have, lol

Every time i see things like this it reaffirms my belief that Sony have a lemon of epic proportions on their hands. Whats next? Sony telling retailers they have to take a loss on the console?
Why not? - they made sweet FA on PS2 consoles!!!
I really cant believe hes said that! Superb.
....dick.....
I suppose there is some truth to what he said as the PS2 is still outselling the 360. :?
Other than that, lemon.
Then there are the claims that the PS3 presial has sold out in the states...

Only becuase there is bugger all, there are links out there which say there is liltte as 5 consoles per city or something along those lines for the us so if you get one your the only one in like a 5 mile radias ^^
Which sounds about right since they still have not shown a working True final PS3, still no boxing or anything. They will produce them in a few weeks and ship them to japan and the US as an interview has said by Plane and out to stores practically days before launch.
It is so tight you know that testing of the machines wont be up to scratch and manafacture issues will almost certanly exist and there will be a lot of PS3s out there that dont work and no replacments for them. I can see all the blogs and articles how people have a ps3 that does not work or crashes a lot and Sony telling them to send it back and not see anything for weeks and weeks there after

Last time a console company tried to get a stores to make a "modest" $20 loss per console it was the sega Dreamcast. If sony tried that their Playstation brand would likely go the same way. You cannot ever expect a company to lose money selling something
What he said has to be taken in context. He is talking about Australia where the PS3 wont be launched until next year. He is comparing prices between the PS2 and the Wii and the Xbox 360. He is trying to protect his market over christmas until PS3 is launched. I am sure he wont mention Overpriced when it happens.

But we are waiting until march to see one also arent we? As ar the rest of Europe. I cant in all honesty see the PS3 doing as well as the PS1 & 2. It doesnt offer enough extra functionality to make it worthwhile. The supposed ace in the the hole of Blu-Ray isn;t looking like itll be as good a thing as people said. Ã,£500+ for a Burner seems a little steep to say the least.
Yes we are, however, he wasnt talking about Europe.
Guess how much DVD and CD burners were when they were first launched. It will no doubt be approx 12 months before someone releases an affordable drive.
my 1st (Dual speed) CD Burner was Ã,£229.99 when i got it, media was ~ Ã,£7 a disk. HD-DVD is likely to be much much cheaper, and there is the crux. Cost. Nobody will disagree Minidisk is a more versatile format than CD, but it fell on its arse because of cost. I can see Blu-Ray heading the same way. As did Laserdisk, and Betamax.
Blu-Ray will end up used in specialist applications, or they will have to rapidly reduce the price.
the biggest difference now is disposable income
these days people spend hidious amounts of money on home cinema kits, large tvs etc
what is Ã,£500 to someone who is willing to spend Ã,£4000 on home cinema kit.
People said the same thing about dvd when it first came out.
The benefit blu-ray has over hd-dvd atm is that the tech has ALOT of future. hd-dvd is simpler and therefore cheaper but it has an limit of capability of a lot lower scale than the blu-ray system.
Whislt still being the uninformed masses, people do know alot more about what they buy than before. And if they dont they will have a friend who does.
At the moment i feel hd-dvd will profit from the start more and blu-ray, but as the technologies progress the power of blu-ray will hopefully shine.
for every person willing to spend Ã,£4000 on a high end TV, there are 4000 people willing to spend upto Ã,£500 on a TV. BluRay has quite a few extra features, but it doesnt have the same percieved value as HD-DVD. I can see why BluRay looks beter, greater storage capacity, greater flexibility, more advanced technology inside it. However to joe average on the street who goes into his local Dixons or whatever to buy a replacement DVD player then HD-DVD is going to be the mainstay.
Reasons are its a known quantity, it has the magic letters "DVD" in the name. Never underestimate an established brand. BluRay will likely end up being heavily used in data storage and video editing. Its perfect, however normal run of the mill joe bloggs will likely take the safe option and buy a HD-DVD player because it has more percieved value.
The real kick will be the first Ã,£250 or less Players, thatll be the point the winner is assured.
They have just gone insane, what on earth are they doing?
QuoteTHE DAYS of getting free DVDs and CDs on magazines might be coming to a close.
Sony has killed off its propaganda organ the Official Playstation magazine claiming that it has ceased to be relevant to the buying public.
One of the big selling points of Official Playstation was the fact that, like many print magazines, it came with a free demo disk.
However Sony marketing VP Peter Dille told Electronista that now that the Playstation Network will be offering web browsing and free downloads, the DVD has become a thing of the past.
The magazine was part of a deal between Sony and publisher Ziff-Davis and has been around since the first Playstation hit the streets. Its last issue will be January. It seems that if the trend against the demo disk is true, then no one seems to have told Sonys rival Microsoft.
Its Official Xbox Magazine, also has a demo disc, and has been doing quite well despite the arrival of Xbox Live in 2002.

I think they are buying Nintendo Shares ;)
the thing is, by doing that you are isolating a small proportion of your gamers who lack internet or are unable to access online services (eg strict network such as at a university)
I am one of these people atm, and have come close to buying xbox magazine a couple of times and i may well be doing soon
I can think of 7 people i know who have no fast internet access, yet have PS2s. They wont be overly happy with trying to download a 500Mb demo over dial-up.
Add to that people with bandwidth limitations on the connection, and you have yet more people pissed at sony
The UK version is still going on.
Yep, even with the normal of 1mb or 2mb most people have 500mb still takes a while.
