Title: Sony wont be in the black
Post by: neXus on May 17, 2007, 11:48:23 AM
QuoteSony to Lose $413M in Video Games Unit

EEEk

Anyone that tells you the PS3 solld and is selling well you can slap them and call them a liar becuase sony even admits they fecked up.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/17/AR2007051700029.html

And they only predict 7ish % improvement of sales which is not much

Again its not to say its not a bad machine, but they are making it at an insane loss to even be close to 360 price and all the other issues with it and the way they made it, delayed it launched it etc - Sony can only blame themselves

PSP - great handheld but only now are there decent games coming out for it

The thing thats going to wreck the PS3 is blue ray tbh.

If theyd had massive sales at launch they could have overcome the late start, technical problems and possibly even the price by having a system that could play the dominant next gen video format.  They could have pushed hard enough across all of Sonys product lines to get Bluray a big market share and keep the competition going but they didnt.

Since porn has gone HD-DVD, HD-DVD discs are cheaper for the same quality, both systems have been hacked and XBoxs HD-DVD drive is about to land theyre kind of screwed.  Unless theyve built in a secret ability to play HD-DVD nin the same drive and just not told anyone theyre probably dead.

They might have been ok as a second console and made a good chunk of the market share but the unexpected huge success of the wii has kind of broken them on that front too.  I hope they hang around for the next generation and dont walk away crying.

Good point I glad you brought up Porn, People may laugh but its that industry that will make a format, Porn embraced dvd big time when people were still unsure and then all the movie companies and the games followed soon after.
So they choosing hd-dvd probably will have the same outcome and if blue ray fails I will feel a bit for Sony, I mean betmax, mini disk - all good formats, but just a bit costly and just not marketed well..

But then again, when will Sony learn how they do and launch these things is not right and look at the others that do and at least follow their role.

Sony has the touch of death when it comes to new formats.

Isnt UMD discontinued already aswell when it comes to getting content like films?

porn has also been the driving force behind most of the interenets development.

CMSs? derived from early passworded porn sites.
payment sites? porn driven.

How does quality change between br and hd-dvd?  Surely they are nothing more than a storage medium and the content is no different?

In the same sense that you can carry a file on, cd-rom, hard disk, flash etc, its still the same content no?

Hd-dvd discs are cheaper and the price drop over time is better then that of blue ray

I was talking to the manager of the Gamestation in Durham. He told me they sold 15 PS3s on Release day and had more to sell. Yet on the same day they sold 41 Xbox360s :D

Sony you have lost the NewGen War!

The porn industy taking HD-DVD will be the reason Blu-ray loses the format war when people look back.  Its already lost its just waiting for players to come down to sensible prices/the xbox drive to appear for it to really become public knowledge HD-DVD won.

Yeah thats what I said - theyre the same quality but HD-DVD is cheaper to produce than Blueray.  A film on HD-DVD costs less than Bluray and you get the same thing on the screen.

There was a theory that Blueray could scale to larger formats but its now fairly clear HD-DVD will scale just as much so the reason for the expensive Blu-ray disks is pointless.

Just cheaper all around really from hardware to disk to manufacture and analysts can see it getting cheaper at a better pace then blue ray.

I do feel for Sony as I said, they do nice things but it dont work out in media but then again like I said they never bloody learn

One thing though is the name..

As I said - Odd bod Joe blogs is in currys being told a load of bull crap from the sales chimp lookign to get a hd player and a new tv.
Now hes been given the tech info and he has no clue really and not waited for his son to visit to help out...

So he is show blue ray or HD-dvd, now him and the mrs will know what a dvd is, HD - hi def dvd, better, blue ray although actually the same thing has a freaky name they not heard of so which you think they would most likley get?
Name is a hell of a lot in a product, I mean the Wii, US side of it were all "erm guys wtf you doing" Even they surprised it sold, but it was a good cheaper(then ps3 360) new style play machine so it was good, but they very nearly blew it with the name
