They have missed an obvious one, how do you read a mercury thermometer? Anyway they are illegal now, you have to use alcohol ones. TBH it would be much easier to sort out a digital one, they can be bought for a quid and its easier to link in to your other bits.

True, its a good idea tbh, but if it were in space, Ironically, Winamp has just started playing Out Of Space by the Prodigy, but anyway... how would a wireless router transmit to earth? its a few miles!!

And I thought there wasnt any air in space, if theres no air whats a fan going to do? its going to be blowing nothing... or am I wrong? wouldnt it need some sort of water cooling?

A fan would circulate whats already there.
You dont use the router as a router, but as a transmitter - hence wireless router = transmitter wirelss card = receiver

Most cars have an electric thermo gage thing.

Exactly, but the point being the output is small and you could build a better transmitter from other things. A wi-fi dongle would contain all that is required, just amplify the signal a bit. Everything it actually needs to do the whole project could be put on a single microchip excluding the power supply. You could fit it all into an orange and plate the outside with solar panneling to provide power.
