Title: Sucker Punch
Post by: Dave on April 07, 2011, 23:49:53 PM
Anyone else seen this?

Went last week not knowing anything about the film - was OK-ish. Girl enters a mental facility, see's it in her head as a mob run showgirl/brother type place and in the process of escaping has a bunch of dreams where her and her other scantily clad female companions battle various things like some teenager's wank fantasy or something....

I rather enjoyed Sucker Punch. There's so much more there than what Dave describes if you take the time to look a little closer when you watch. Admittedly it isn't marketed as that but if you scratch beneath the surface there's quite a lot there.

It's suffering the same fate as Watchmen. A good film with lots going on that gets marketed as an brainless action flick. People go expecting this and are disappointed. It's a crying shame that the industry hasn't quite managed to grasp what Zack Snyder is all about yet.

After reading this: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/48998 (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/48998)

QuoteZack Snyder's SUCKER PUNCH is a movie so terrible that it retroactively makes his entire body of work worse. It is a soulless automaton of a movie, lumbering loudly from scene to scene, knowing where it has been told to go, but never giving a **** about where it's ending up. It's like spending two hours in the mind of a chronically masturbating thirteen year old boy who can't keep his hands off his thing long enough to hold a halfway decent conversation. It is a movie that demands an endless stream of metaphors describing it, because simple phrases like "sucks **** through a straw" don't quite do its awfulness justice.

 ...and many similar reviews, I decided not to bother seeing it at the cinema (it was the missus that first showed interest).

It sounds to me like the sort of film that if Paul Verhoeven had directed it and lost the 12A rating would be right up my street  :heehaw:

Yeah it was enjoyable, didn't know anything about it before I'd watched it - rather it was chosen by the girl I was taking out. Having said that I thought I'd more or less summed it up - I'd be interested to know if there was anything fundamental that I'd glossed over?  tbh.. it didn't strike me as being particularly deep in any sense.
