QuoteLOS ANGELES (Reuters) Director Peter Jackson has been told he will not be hired to direct a movie based on J.R.R. Tolkien novel "The Hobbit," despite the nearly $3 billion global box office success of his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, according to a letter Jackson wrote to fan site TheOneRing.net.
The trilogy of movies is based on Tolkiens fantastic tale of an epic war among wizards, sorcerers, elves, villainous orcs and friendly little hobbits of whom the novels hero, Frodo, is one. It is Frodo who eventually saves the day. "The Hobbit" is a fairy tale-like story that Tolkien wrote before the "Rings" trilogy.
In Jacksons letter, which was posted on the Web site late on Sunday, the director said last week a top executive with Los Angeles-based New Line Cinema called him to say the studio was moving ahead on "The Hobbit" movie without Jackson.
"This was a courtesy call to let us know that the studio was now actively looking to hire another filmmaker," Jackson wrote.
A spokesman for New Line declined to comment citing company policy, and a Los Angeles representative for New Zealand-based Jackson was not immediately available.
Chris Pirrotta, co-founder of TheOneRing.net, said the fan site has a long-running relationship with Jackson. Since posting the letter, he said the site has received some 100,000 visitors, far above the more normal 15,000 per day.
"They are very upset," Pirrotta told Reuters. "We are seeing calls for everything from letter writing campaigns to a boycott of the studio."
New Line and Jacksons production company, Wingnut Films, are currently embroiled in a lawsuit over income from 2001s "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," which is the first film in the trilogy.
In his letter, Jackson said he and his producing partners have refused to discuss a "Hobbit" film until the lawsuit is settled, and he added that New Line informed him the studio had limited time to make the film so it must move on.
"Given that New Line are committed to this course of action, we felt at the very least, we owed you, the fans, a straightforward account of events as they have unfolded for us," Jackson wrote.
All money with them and As a result they have to be twats about it, He would make a good version of it, he would be able to get the same actors he would use same set elements and tech from his studio and it would fit and work along side the other 3 movies.
Now it could end up completely different and rather pants
It might turn out to be a good thing, I mean The Hobbit has a completely different tone to LOTR - the two stories dont fit neatly together.
I wont watch it if it doesnt have Ian McKellan as Gandalf.
Might be a good thing, the LOTR trilogy was flowery crap. A bit like the novels then.
i love the hobbit, looking forward to it no matter what.
Do they need Jackson? Im sure someone else can press Go on Photoshop and leave the computers to it for another 6 months.

Well yeah, you need the same actors and he would be able to get them easier , only thing would be if they already signed to do it someday which they may have had.
they 100% do need the same actors or people will just get annoyed, if it was made 30 years from now or something then it would not matter but if its a couple f years away they need to.
Golum was created by Jacksons digital studio so may actually be hard to replicate and more then likley will not look the same or move the same even if you tried.
While you can copy it if you not got the same people working on the film it does look different, happened before in many films.
It never hurt James Bond or Neighbours..
tbh Id actually prefer someone else doing the film, I thought a lot of stuff was overstated visually like "look guys, Bilbo has turned Evil for this bit" or "Hey, check the 50million orcs I got in my army" and all the "Come ere you, giz a snog me darling" looks the hobbits shared.
Gollum aint a huge problem cos the scene hes in is dark tunnels, Bilbo - I dont care either way, Gandalf definately gotta be the same bloke tho.
Am I the only person who thinks LOTR was computer generated crap ? When people talk about a proper Director, surely they mean Sir Clint or Scorcese ?

I agree, I cant stand it. Whilst Im no fan of the books I dont think the films stand up in their own right either. The only semi-passable thing Jackson has ever directed was Heavenly Creatures, which seems to be a flash in the pan as nothing since or before was any good.

Are you forgetting bad taste?
One of the greatest ott gore flicks ever!!

Obviously someone has never read the books then, TBH if you never read them in childhood they are boring as hell and highly dated. They would never get the go-ahead from a publisher today.

Could they have done *anything* to make Neighbours any *WORSE*?
Vomit with horse dung on top IMO.

A lot of people liked it, and you cant please everyone all the time. There are doubtless things that you like that others think of as rubbish too.

Actually I read them both as a child and once again as a critic when I wrote a number of research papers on them not so long ago.
QuoteSir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings films, has voiced dismay over the decision to drop Peter Jackson as director of The Hobbit.
Im very sad as I should have relished revisiting Middle Earth with Peter again," the actor wrote on his website.
"Its hard to imagine any other director matching his achievement in Tolkien country."
