Title: The Orange Box
Post by: Batch on October 13, 2007, 19:33:53 PM
I been reading a magazine for the 360 and came across a review of The Orange Box. This magazine, X360, gave it a whopping 10 out of 10 overall. Now that says something doesnt it?

It split the review into the games. The first review was for HL2 and Episodes 1 and 2 and they gave that 10/10. Then came Portal which was given 9/10 and then Team Fortress 2 which they couldnt give a score but on the page was the overall score of 10/10 in its entirety. Now, I was planning to get this when I first heard that this was to be released but now I am so excited to get it when it releases on Friday next week.

While I wait till Friday, I managed to get Counterstrike and my god that still is a great game, even a few years after release. Theres still people on there playing it online!!

Anyone else going to get The Orange Box and does anyone here still play Counterstrike?

They were well bribed? :D

I have seen several games get rave reviews and when people get the thing home it was rubbish.

For what you get, it is 10/10. Wasnt halflife alone getting 9/10 scores? then you get the expansion pack thing & TF2 is just awesome

I still play CS:S every so often, only been playing on and off for the past year though.

I wont be getting the orange box, just waiting for the standard Episode 2 to be released. And it bloody well better be longer than Ep 1!  :x

Read a review for the game content and elements of the game and then play a demo or read a few, watch some videos and make your own mind up
The publishers of that mag actually run the 360 official magazine as well so will tend to be bribed and get told to like something

It is defiantly a great pack of games with variety and gameplay but a lot of other sites have gave it good results but fair reviews But it always boils down to if YOU like it and that is the only thing that matters

Its probably the deal of the century as far as game releases go.

The average review scores so far are....

HL2 (96%)
EP1 (87%) Which was slightly dissapointing imo.
EP2 (92%)
Portal (88%)
TF2 (93%) <- Worth the cost of the box alone...

Ment to be worth playing through with the commentary after you have finished it once.

Have you seen the achievement for sending the Gnome into space?

You have to pick him up at the start of EP2, and put him in a rocket at the end of the game.

Madness!

Here are some non story spoiling screenshots.  For a game that is still using some the texturing

As much as I would like to posts some more interesting screenshots, I would hate to spoil anything.

I am so far blown away by the game in all departments.  It really is making me realise how disapointing EP1 one was left feeling unsatisified.

Portal is something that should be played in one outing.  Its short and doesnt outstay its welcome.  I cant fault it, the story and the ending are top notch pitch black hilarious for which it should not be spoiled for anyone.

Ive only played on TF2 about 5 minutes but it it seems great. Did quite well as a pyro.  8-)

939 AMD 64 3500+ (2.4Ghz)
1GB PC3200 Dual Channel
DFI Lan Party NF4 SLi-DR Expert
Geforce 8800GTS 320MB XT

It was an asus board & Geforce 4 Ti 4200.  I recently decided to upgrade and spend about £200 on it.  I knew my processor & ram was decent enough and I needed to give the graphics a kick after 3-4 years with that card.

I just didnt expect it to run that well.  Everything on Max, 4xAA, Full Reflect, HDR, Motion Blur. 1440x900.  Thats the reccommended settings by the game.

Not having rediculous resolutions helps I suppose.

Cool, Maybe you could give me some feedback then if things look that good

My system is better then yours bar the graphics card and I was thinking of doing something about it before going new zealand as I do not know any of the web shops like here yet to get cool deals

I have one of these:
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/PCI-E/nVIDIA+GeForce+7+Series/+XFX+GeForce+7950GT+550M+512MB+DDR3?productId=25677

Now do I get another one of these for sli or get a Geforce 8800GTS?

On the basis of how future games are slowly moving towards DX10.  Go for a Geforce 8.  When you later decide to SLI it, it wont be the case of beefing it up but being one step behind with its abilities.

Cheers, I will look at an 8800 and shift this card, if anyone wants it here it will be up for sale in a few weeks :)

I do not think I will get the orange box, no cash now and no computer for 2 months as well

EDIT: What would you recommend in terms of the under £200 ones then?

Completed EP2 and Portal over the weekend (on PC) and really enjoyed them both. Portal was something new and very very funny in parts and episode 2 was just great, couldnt of really asked for any more.

Both games looked stunning, was running at 1400x1028 (or whatever the 16:10 rez is for 1400x) high everything, VSYNC off.

Will post a couple screnshots later on if i remember :)

edit: I havent been on the forums for a week so sorry if Ive missed a post about it but... Value have said they will be releasing a Weighted Companion Cube toy before Christmas!!!!!11111oneoneone

XFX 8800GTS 320MB XT

The 320mb versions (of any brand) seems to outperform the 640mb except in some situations such as very high resolution tests.

The 8800GTS seems to be the midrange card atm.

Most of them involve accidently blowing a hole in something and going... oooooo shiny stuff in there
