i just browsed quickly on ebuyer for clearance laptops and came up with this gem...

for a grand i dont see where the price comes from at all

12.1" screen and it aint even dual core?? no vista either (some say thats a good thing)

i kno the battery life can apparently run for 11 hours... but it cant justify the price tag

anyone else see shockingly priced hardware online?? (its not really something i see much of - the internet is generally really cheap)

I agree I wouldnt buy one, but ultra small + ultra light + long battery life = pricey.

Theyre not aimed at home users theyre business laptops I should think. Our pre sales / sales guys would love them  for the battery life and compact build and they wouldnt care about processor/ram/HDD. Not a bad buy for the right customer.

I think your paying for the name.  I would rather buy a HP printer for office use.

You can get the faster hp the same size cheaper.

its not cheap, but they are still expensive elsewhere.  The ultra portables are now pretty thin on the ground, and you pay for them when you do find them.  Customer just bought the little Sony Vaio, against my advice.  Cost £900 with XP pro on it, not worth the cash as all, especially when you add the extra £200 she paid for the docking station and "Care Pack" with 3 years extended warranty.

Unfortunately true, I, like most people, use a PC for mostly wordprocessing and internet access. Buying a fast laptop isnt my priority. The problem is I cant find one thats smallish, has good battery life and, most of all, is cheap.

TBH this sort of device shouldnt be too difficult to make now, they should be able to churn something out for less than a couple of hundred quid using Linux.

I seem to remember many years ago Atari made a cheap portable  and Amstrad did too. Both did reasonably well short term.

OK, not the most technically advanced item, even for its day, but if all you want to do is word process and do email on the go you would need little more.

I am beginning to question what is going on at ebuyer though, there are loads of items that have a xxx price or price that has changed a number of times in just a few days and not by just a few pounds, some tripple the price it was a day before and then back down and today their enote ticket reply time was 2 weeks, Either the site is having some huge issues or the company is.

talk to a Land Surveyor using it on a construction site and then call them needless.

My ex-boss spent over £3 grand on a "toughbook" machine which was slow as anything but basically invulnerable. Great for working outside in all weathers.

Depends on your priorities, most people could get along on a far slower system than they have. My priority would be highly based on battery life, someone elses on toughness, others on price or on games capability. If it doesnt fit your priorities then you might as well not bother.

yea i didnt actually mean that the laptop was cack as a piece of hardware, but as far as technical specification goes its a bit poo

i totally agree with the notion of priorities, no point in paying money for things you will never need
