Ive joined the club in ordering one.
Main reason is it makes mores sense to have a mediaserver, than using HDD's that I hot plug into a dock.
Anyway.... my plan was to install XBMC - thought that if theres other likeminded people doing the same
we could start a seperate thread & help each other out.. maybe likewise for those who bought it to turn
into a NAS or VMware machine.
Mines setup primarily as a NAS, so currently running 1x250GB & 2 x 2TB F4s in raid 1, on W7 Pro (I don't need server or home server etc, I just want it to have minimal services running, apart from those I specifically add). Will also be using this to Sync my documents over VPN to a computer at my parents, so I have an off-site backup.
Software..
- NAS (of course!)
- VNC (So I can control it - no monitor)
- VPN (Remote access from my laptop, ipad, iphone and remote backup server)
- Airvideo (So I can play movies direct to my iPad/iPhone also works over the VPN)
- No-ip daemon (Gives me a static address for my dynamic IP)
- uTorrent (with webGUI)
- Peer Guardian (Helps filter out some of those IPs I dont want snooping)
- MS Security Essentials
- Acronis (Keeps the OS partition safe ;) )
- iTunes (not running at the moment as uses an extra 10 watts - might set this up as remote start)
Hardware:
- 4GB Non-ECC RAM
- USB sound dongle
- 1TB MyBook Mirror Edition (Also in RAID 1)
- 8GB USB CADDY Mini SSD out of my netbook (for the acronis backup, using internal USB port)
Mine is going to be used as a NAS/backup server and occasionally a media server streaming via my PS3.
The plan is:
1x Proliant Microserver sticking with the standard 1Gb RAM for the time being
4x 2Tb HDDs (need to buy) in RAID 5 using the swap bays
1x 5.25" to 3.5" drive converter (need to buy)
1x 250Tb HDD (included) for Windows Server
install Windows via USB DVD drive
I'll be running very little, perhaps only uTorrent and PS3 media server even
NAS/HTPC for me. My delivery has been delayed until Tuesday which is annoying, I already have everything else.
1x MicroServer
1x 5.25 > 3.5" drive convertor kit
1x 250GB drive that comes with it for system drive (until I need an extra 2TB :P)
4x 2tb Samsung Drives
1x 2GB Ram Stick
1x Asus 'silent & low profile' nVidia 210
I was planning to just use a USB xbmc install to boot off but thinking about it I will prob want Windows on it so plan to install Windows 7 via USB and then stick in XMBC install on it and get it setup like my other installs.
Will also be using uTorrent, SABnzb+, Sick Beard & Couch Potato on it for all my media needs :)
those who are going to use raid, might want to read http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=8349.msg102362#msg102362
