Title: tomtom and an n70
Post by: dannywheeleruk on January 18, 2007, 00:45:19 AM
how do, im on the verge of getting rid of my pda sat nav setup and getting an n70 with tomtom instead save me carrying the whole lot around.

however, is the mobile version the same as the pda version and so would the extra maps i have still work on the phone?

also anyone with any experience of using this combination would be more than welcome to leave their experiences of how useful it was here

thanks very much for your time

Its a bit different, mainly to take account for the lack of touchscreen, but it still does the same stuff.  Maps should still work, depending on how illegally you got them.

However, on my dads N70 the gps connection seems to drop and tomtom goes up the sh*tter, and the phone needs rebooting.  Happens every now and then.  think its a problem with the n70, not tomtom or the GPS.

Ensure you get a 64 channell gps device :) Ive used the N70 a fair few times and other kinds of Nokia with TomTom Mobile. All where fine, just ensure the Bluetooth GPS device is a good one :)

You can load in extra maps to TomTom Mobile im just unsure if the are the same ones that are used for a PDA.

Btw Welcome to the Forum. Stick around :)

Reading about the amount of problems people have had with the n70 and tomtom, i wouldnt touch it with a bargepole.

Go for a tmobile MDA compact II / O2 XDA mini S / orange m600 or similar.  Much better.

I know the N80 had issues with sockets on bluetooth, and GPS devices kept losing connectivity but its apparantly been fixed with a firmware update. Sooooo check the nokia site and upgrade if your having issues too. :D

As I understand it a firmware update doesnt help the n70/tomtom issues in the majority of cases.  Steer clear.

Could always use something like wayfinder or similar. Free.. download the maps using googlemaps, plan a route on gmap pedometer, and sorted. :)

Or you could get a proper phone from the start and not have to compromise

an N70 can be used perfectly adequately for phone calls and SMS including MMS. Its a phone.

What your asking are higher functions than just a phone.

TomTom costs a hell of a lot of money in comparison to "free & legal". Its just an alternative.

I also noticed your turn of phrase, your dad apparantly has an N70 and tomtom, and has disconnection problems. Yet you only talk of "from what I hear" when discussing the firmware update. This suggests that your father, or yourself have yet to attempt a firmware update from the nokia website.

Takes 5 minutes, and is certainly less effort, and cost than spending a few hundred pounds on a large (in comparison to the n70) cumbersome (again in comparison to the n70) pda-style phone.

I really cba.

The MDA II compact is a better phone in every respect.  And size wize, its a tad wider but the same in other dimensions [edit] actually its only 5mm wider and smaller in all other dimensions.  And its cheaper.  And you only need to have a google and find all the hundreds of posts saying "The firmware update did sweet F.A" to see you are (yet again) talking out of your arse.

Im going back to bed now.

Stop being tight and just buy a Tom Tom if you want one. Theyre what Ã,£160 now? All the ones Ive seen running on phones are crap in comparison to the proper unit.

Whats being a student got to do with it? Do you have a chip on your shoulder or something? I just think pda / phone tom toms are sh*t having seen them on enough unfortunate occasions.
