I have an AVI file, aparently DIVX 5 format, which Id rather like to make into a DVD or VCD...
All my attempts at making DVDs have so far resulted in a long wait, and a drinks coaster as a result (using nero).
Anyone know what Im doing wrong?
mmm, what do you do when you use nero ?
you use nerovision express right ?
open up nerovision express, click to make a new dvd, drag the vid file into the window, keep clicking next untill its done :)
I just tried that... the past two and a half hours it has been doing its thing, and at the end of it it insisted the file was too big for the disc (i know for a fact it wasnt) and wouldnt even burn anything.
I WANT THOSE TWO AND A HALF HOURS BACK.
have you tried writing it to the hard drive first ?
I used to do that if they didn;t work forst time..
at the last screen before you click next to burn it, you can choose where to burn/write it to (its in the rop right corner iirc)
burn it to a HD folder, then just use nero burning rom to stick it on a dvd later :)
(load up nero burning rom, choose new dvd vidio file, then just copy the files over)
and set it going at night so you dont have to wait :p
(or set it to min. resources / slow and start it in the morning!)
edit/ps. i always found they went much quicker if you were reading to one disk and writing to another... even if the other is in a different computer over the network etc...

have you got the newest version of nerovision express? the first versions were a bit dodgey at times.
you will find windvd easier though, its a 1 click program thats so easy anyone could use it
i still use NVE3 though, work fine 99% of the time, i have none of the problems you mention and neither do my friends :?
also what spec is the pc?
my dual core manages average convert times of <20 mins
Im running NVE2 on a Barton 2500+ (at 3200+ for transcoding lol)
DVD Santa http://www.dvdsanta.com/ is your friend.
Every week I erm get a few episodes of TV series off the net and convert them to a DVD and give them to friends. Takes about half an hour on my 3Ghz P4 for a 45 minute episode.
If your gonna do multiple files onto one disc its a little more complicated as you need to change the size of the dvd it will create the files for then use dvdlab to create a dvd with a menu etc, if you want I can explain how to do that too.
I advise you edit that last post before an admin comes across this thread Russel
that there be illegal

Well actually its not illegal, TV episodes is somewhat of a grey area when it comes to copyright etc, these are episodes recorded off the tv not DVD rips Im talking about.

overclocking is all well and good however it can create inaccuracies in mathematical calculations (the reason why superpi is actually a good indicator of a stable overclock).
Id keep it at the 2500+ speeds and just let it chug through, it could even be that which is causing the problem. :)

No grey area at all, it is illegal, tis even illegal to use a video recorder to do it, but it is overlooked as the majority of the time it is personal use. Now the downloading and distribution of copyrighted materials is VERY ILLEGAL
:D :D :D
They havent tried it in the UK due to loosing the Sony Betamax case in the US and they arent going to either so even though TV programmes should be regarded as copyright nobody is going to be breaking down your door. They would have to do it to most other people in the country too and then theres parts of Europe that recieve our broadcasts too...
As to downloading and broadcasting it depends on the material and the permission the copyright owner(s) give.
BBC though is having to look very seriously at copyright due to their proposed web broadcasting.
The rules with televised broadcasts are that you can archive them for later viewing, but you do not have distribution rights.
Just reading the copyright act makes that clear enough. Russell you also mention that you downloaded them from the net not recorded them yourself.
To briefly get back to the original question, I use DVD2one for burning, its quick, really simple to use and best of all it squishes great big files onto teeny weeny dvds lol
I got the whole of Doctor Who 2005 (including the Christmas Invasion, making 14 episodes) onto 3 dvds, and the quality is excellent.
And before anyone jumps on me about copyright etc, these are back ups for my own personal use. :D

still illegal to copy the discs though, read the copyright info at the beginning ;)
i mean ffs, its even illegal to lend a dvd out
I never did see the point of that one, to be illegal to lend a DVD/Album/Game etc. I mean who doesnt whether they know its illegal or not.
How the heck could you prove that one anyway?
i know mate, tis quite sad considering they only do it to milk more out of the consumer. thats why piracy doesnt bother me tbh, they are just too greedy :x
lawers do my nut in.
