Title: Ubuntu Sound Card
Post by: Mongoose on April 23, 2007, 12:46:01 PM
over the weekend my little sisters sound card packed in. In a fit of sportingness, I shoved the card out of my PC into hers on the grounds that she was off to uni and is basically computer illiterate so would have been unable to replace it herself.

Since the spare I thought I had seems to have gone walkies, I am down by one sound card and need to get a new one.

What would you suggest as a card which produces decent sound for a decent price and works out of the box (or as near to as possible) in Ubuntu Edgy?

I dont need any funky features, the sound goes through the Aux on my modest stereo system which is analogue and 2.0 so no need for hundreds of cool outputs.

try cleaning the contacts on your sisters old one and putting it into your compy, it might still work.

Just get the cheapest used card from your local computer recycler--itll likely work. Or see if youve got an on-board one that was disabled when you had the old card.

You can also search Ubuntuforums.org.

Ive only used onboard cards with Ubuntu without problems cept I had to modprobe my cousins ancient IBM. Mmmm, probe.

cheers guys,

sisters old card is on-board, so no joy there, and my Tyan motherboard doesnt have any poncy extras like onboard......well frankly anything, it barely has onboard USB!

Ive seen a couple of recommendations over on the Ubuntu forums for the M-Audio Revolution 5.1. Might suit my needs since my Stereo is destined to get a decent Amp bolted to it at some point (it already has a moderately nice for the price set of Gale speakers). The sound is already better than my old Altec Lansing 621s could manage, just isnt quite in the Hi-Fi league yet.

Those M-Audio revs are nice cards, highly rated.

I have gone for a Terratec Aureon 5.1, £15 from Microdirect

the Rev looks nice but is a little bitty bit on the pricey side really for my current budget. Also in all honesty with the number of bits of camera and fencing kit I want to buy my Hi-Fi isnt going to get an upgrade any time soon!

New sound card is in and working :)

just dropped her in and away she went, sounds great. Ubuntu proves worthy of my devotion once again :)

Also worthy of note, this card is half the price of the Aurion 5.1 Fun on Microdirect, but the card you get is exactly the same. Presumably it lacks the software bundle or something, MD are a little vague as to the difference, but the card I received is stamped "Aurion 5.1 Fun" on the back despite coming out of an Aurion 5.1 PCI box.
