Title: Uni Halls Networking and Email Clients
Post by: ERU on September 20, 2007, 18:46:52 PM
Hey tek dudes,

As some of you know ive moved to Brunel Uni for a years course. I live in halls of residence and have the free internet Unis give. Great you may think!
Well no, its not so great. The restrictions are annoying to say the least.

My main problem is no smpt and no Mozilla Thunderbird as it is blocked. I have asked why and was told its a big no no for security reasons. Now I have numerous email accounts to check/save via Thunderbird, so loosing it is going to be a issue. Anyone got any ideas how to get around it? perhaps a proxy?

You should have gone to specsa..no...the University of Reading. They have THE best Internet policy Ive ever come across...you get a public IP with only a few ports blocked (torrents and P2P)...no transparent proxying, no 30 page you can and cant do this bollocks just a simple document saying they expect you to be responsible and everything is pretty much at their discretion.

If you're a bit of a geek and want to run NAT behind your public IP and have a load of VPN tunnels out, or host game servers (as long as its not for profit) then that's fine.

They don't come out with any of this blanket 'it's a security risk' bollocks. They have excellent managed switches that'll automatically cut a machine off if it's found to be unpatched or transmitting too much data etc.

Big thumbs up to them, I say !

If I miss one lecture I have to go tell the course manager why. I even get an email. Sux.

Christ!! Things have changed since I was at uni. Me and a mate managed to pass the entire radio comedy module of our FTVRS course by going to only the first lecture (out of six) and no seminars (out of six) - just did the essay at the end and handed it in. Got a good grade too lol!!

There probably wont be a simple workaround.  Your uni will be running the same policy as all universities on the education backbone and theyve got very good at blocking what they dont want you to access.

Thats just how it is unfortunately.  You can configure some mail clients to pull mail through http (outlook web access etc) but if they want to stop you accessing these things they can.

The argument is - the free internet access is so you can access course module pages and the intranets.  Its not a full internet connection like you wowuld get at home.
