Just two months short of four years, Ive finally got around to "upgrading" my PC.
The retired parts.....
AMD Opteron 165(1.8GHz) @ 2.7GHz, aircooled
DFI NF4 Ultra-D @ 300MHz
2GB GSkill PC4000(250MHz) @ 300MHz 3,4,4,8
4 x 250GB(125GB platters) Hitachi HDs in RAID 0
2 x nVidia 7900GTX 512mb
16x NEC PATA DVD writer
1.44mb Floppy drive :D
Windows XP 64bit
Remaining parts....
Sound Blaster X-FI
Coolermaster Stacker case
600w Silverstone PSU
MS Razor Habu mouse
MS Keyboard
Dell 20" wide screen TFT (Over 5 years old!)
Logitech Z680 Speakers (About 7~8 years old now.)
New Parts
AMD Athlon II X2 245(2.9GHz), currently at 3.5GHz with no voltage increase and aircooled, load temp of 33C. This is a stop gap CPU, in a year or so Ill be going hex core or something, if I need to that is.
ASUS M4A89GTD Pro (AMD 890GX Chipset), too many new BIOS options :gag:
4GB GSkill PC16000(2GHz), 9,9,9,27. Not started overclocking yet, still working on the CPU.
2 x Samsung F3 1TB(500GB platters) in RAID 0
24x NEC SATA DVD writer
Windows 7 64bit
I couldnt justify spending too much, although this little lot still came to £550. Hardly play games any more and my current PC was more than fast enough for what I used it for. Still, it was time......
Using the onboard GFX for now, will get a dedicated GFX card in a month or two, or if a game comes out I really want to play.
So far, pretty happy with it all, really liking Windows 7 and the Italy theme I installed. I feel so out of the loop but its quite exciting to have a new PC to play with again also. Doing all that overclocking malarky :D
Upto 3.7GHz now, 1.5v, load temps at 38C.
nice oc there....
you should really be able to notice the difference ?
Was planning on upgrading (well replacing) my 4-5 year old machine after this job finishes but it will have to wait till I come back from next stint of travels (and earn some more money).
Wouldnt know where to start when it comes to OC anymore, might come flooding back if I started tampering again tho

I sense sarcasm..... :mutley: To be honest, Im not noticing any difference what so ever as Ive not ran any benchmarks yet. Still just searching for the limit and Prime 95ing it :)
How does the new new 2x HDD RAID compare to the old 4x HDD RAID?
Just "upgraded" my sons puter, we put the money on the graphics, ATI 5850 BE , AM3 MB with a AMD Athlon II X2 240 (2.8GHz) @ 3.0 at the moment but should do 3.4 without problem.
ive not upgraded in years... well changed teh PSU & videocard that both conked out.
Im not really sure what im running anymore!

Ill have to fire up HDTune and see what it says. On paper this 2 drive RAID should be faster due to the much larger platters.
EDIT:

Yep, its pretty fast. Im sure my previous setup maxed out at about 160mb/s.
HDDs are getting faster and faster with the platter sizes for sure, good result there. My 5,400rpm 2Tb F3 Spinpoint drive seems much faster than my 750Gb 7,200 rpm Spinpoint F1 drives

no.... i was being serious !
I went from 4gig to 4.6gig and really noticed the difference.... tho I guess that could be due to ram timings etc.. too :o
