Anyone else getting very poor speeds between 17:00 and 0:00 ?
i am on an 8mb line, and i know they "cut" the speeds between peak hours.
however
this one was done 30mins ago: (http://www.speedtest.net/result/219527298.png)
and this one was done the other night after midnight: (http://www.speedtest.net/result/218939267.png)
tried ringing them to complain about the speed but they would have none of it, it is basically meaning anything i want to download will download at 3k a second and web browsing is almost unusable.
anyone got any suggestions or is this common?
Same here. I try and work in the day and play XBL at night, on Virgins Hamster Internet I cant.
Fortunatly, atm.... I can play in the day and work at night.
QuoteWhen someone is downloading and/or uploading a particularly large amount of information over a long period of time, it can slow down the Internet speed for other users who might just be checking their email or browsing online. So to make sure our service is fair for everybody, we sometimes moderate the speeds during peak times (4pm till 9pm) for customers who are downloading and/or uploading an unusually large amount at these times.
Just knock the downloading on the head between those times.
You are not the first to moan about this and not the last either
Virgin are having a very stupid and harsh fair use policy but currently even if you not using the net loads with downloads etc at peak times everyone is getting crappy spreads and their net is struggling with poor performance when any level of people get online

I never have a speed issue, very weird.

Im on Virgin Cable & my 20mb cuts down to 10mb & then down to 5mb
At least thats what newsbin tells me

Issue is i dont download during these hours as it is almost impossible too, just do web browsing and online gameplay during this time.
Speed doesnt go back to normal till 0:00 so the 4pm-9pm is b******s
next question..... fed up with virginmedia, cant see how this is fair usage policy, so........ who is a good adsl provider?
If you dont have a BT line youre pretty much stuck. If you do, Id suggest seeing if your exchange is Be (https://www.bethere.co.uk/) enabled and go with them.
yeah got a BT line
as for Be - "Unfortunately Be is not available in your area yet"
Im with Pipex and no matter what time it is I always have the same speed, well give or take 200kb.
just hit 844.1 kb/s, very happy with that speed, a 800 mb film down in 15 Mins, brilliant, its now 3.30 pm

The answer is in your first sentence... Go with a proper ISP ;)

Its TalkTalk, what do you expect man? I work about 50 feet from some of the muppets who do support, for them.
so anyway, obviously virginmedia have it in for me, so i need to change providers, need some suggestions if possible, i cant get cable.
thinking about sky as it is already installed in my apartment i just need a subscription but i dont know if their adsl is any good?
currently paying £24.99 with virgin as i signed up years ago and they never changed the driect debit, so for that money i can almost get skys free view and internet!
I think it will be to do with this, possibly. :-/

Is bethere.co.uk available where you are?

hmm ok so maybe at some point i was downloading that amount of data during those times (obviously all work related backups etc...... ;) ) but i physically cannot now :( do you think there is a way to get my name off this "unusually large downloaders list" ?
bethere is not available so im stuck with the usual candidates, sigh
how can they claim the top 3% download a certain amount?
surely that would vary over time and that makes a false claim, and what is the point in having a connection i cant use legally during peak times without silly limitting.
Ecilpse have an indicator in the account management section of their website, green = no limit, orange = slightly limited, red = screwed. Been red for the past three months. :D
They reward good downloaders, just hit 19.8 fastest yet nealy full speed at 10.39 PM, Im happy
it now my sig.

ive had a response to my snotty e-mail i sent them, not that it helps much at the moment
QuoteDear Kris,
Thanks for your email.
Im sorry that you have been experiencing issues with the speed of your broadband.
During our sign-up process we do our best explain that the service speeds will vary depending on the individual phone line, distance from exchange, time of day and a number of other factors.
However we do recognise that some customers are not getting their fair share of available bandwidth during peak times, which is not acceptable to the customer or us.
One of our areas of concern is that we have a small minority of customers placing inordinately high demands on the available bandwidth during peak times, to the detriment of the majority.
We fully acknowledge these issues and already have a number of resolutions in progress which we believe will start to deliver improvements in the coming months.

Only the usual ones that use a BT line, cant get cable.
My house is definitely not on their list, just hit 1.1 MB/s and a torrent .
